Another option could be that Z somehow was connected to this case elsewise. Badlands had appeared in the cinemas at least one year earlier, what makes me a bit supicious is that Z is referring to the year 1959. The Starkweather/Fugate murder spree happened in 1958, but Starkweather was executed in 1959. Z refers to the ad for the movie, eventually has never seen it by himself.
