In the Little List letter, Z refers to the Mikado song "As someday it may happen that a victim must be found". Not only spelling errors but even differences in the text's meaning are obvious:

Zodiac vs. Original
"...that nice impriest..." vs. "...that Nisi prius..."
"...judicial hummerest..." vs. "...judicial humorist..."
"...and uncompromising kind..." vs. "...apologetic statesmen of a compromising kind..."

It gets somewhat clear that Z had not read the original text too often. Instead, it sounds as if he had 'learned' the text by listening to e.g. a music teacher. Also, we do know that some of Z's victims had ties to musical education. Also, one should be aware that the Mikado song is not a solo song but comes with a chorus: By nature, the training of such a chorus is rather by listening/practicing after having learned the text/melody once. If text is not learned perfectly, e.g. during preparation of a piece, any chorus member could easily make such mistakes.

Following this thought, Z could very well have been a member of such a Mikado chorus - this not according to his personality but personal interest in such music. Also, it'd be interesting if there had been victims of such chorus.

Certainly, when writing the letter, he did not copy the text from the original printed form but from what he had heard / learned acustically. Also, a record of such song would rather be rare (and not necessarily heard on a daily basis to learn the text from). Thus, I assume he actually prepared for some performance - most likely in a chorus and not necessarily for the role of Ko-Ko, as has been assumed in the past.

By then, the Lamplighter's theater in SF focussed on such Gilbert & Sullivan musicals, the Mikado in particular, which brings up the Lamplighter's connection again: Three months earlier, in fact, the piece was shown by the Lamplighter's at the 'Presentation Theater' (and other locations). Very well Z could still have (still) remembered the text three months later from having been part of the chorus.

Update:
Another little but possibly important detail: Z wrote:

"Ps. The Mt. Diablo Code concerns Radians +# inches along the radians"

In fact, the # (hashtag) symbol very clearly seems to have been added after the sentence had been written without it. Z even points on the hashtag symbol by drawing a small arrow below it. This should not be ignored: The hashtag symbol also represents that the inches are meant to be 'hashed', thus most likely be divided by e.g. ten. "Two point one" radians would therefore be written as "Twentyone". Vallejo, for example, 40 miles away from Mt. Diablo, would be 40 / 6.4 = 6.25 inches or 62.5 ('sixtytwopointfive'). One might conclude that the last letter ended as a number from 1 to 9, thus (ON)E (TW)O etc. thus E, O, R, X, N, T with the second symbol/letter being equal to that; for example the cleartext (assuming it consists of numbers) starting with FOUR... and ending with ...TWO.

Pairs (first, then last number in potential cleartext):

ONE
TWO
THREE
FOUR
FIVE
SIX
SEVEN
EIGHT
NINE

ONE is a match with SEVEN (only).
TWO has no match (as no number ends with 'W')
THREE has no match
FOUR is a match TWO
FIVE has no match
SIX has no match
SEVEN has a match with ONE, THREE, FIVE or NINE
EIGHT has no match
NINE has no match.

According to this, the cleartext of the map cipher starts / ends with one of the following:

ONE..(..)..SEVEN
FOUR..(..)..TWO
SEVEN..(..)..ONE
SEVEN..(..)..THREE
SEVEN..(..)..FIVE
SEVEN..(..)..NINE

By definition, one radian is 57.29578° degree. Thus, 6.28318 radians make a full 360° degree rose - there is no radian "SEVEN". This rules out all terminology such as "sevenpointthree" in the cleartext. However it lets left e.g. "seventyfive" GRADIANS (1/10th of a radian), but we might ignore that one for the moment. This leads us to either "ONEPOINT..." or "FOURPOINT..." or "RADIAN.." as a potential beginning of the cleartext. This should lead to the direction, with Mag North still to be considered (moreless placing Z into the NE or SW of Mt. Diablo).

Regarding the # inches (or distance from Mt. Diablo):
Staying in a range of let's say 100 miles we are talking about 15.625 inches on the map or a value of maximum 156.25, therefore ending up with (only)

"TWENTYSEVEN"
"THIRTYSEVEN"
"FOURTYSEVEN"
"FIFTYSEVEN"
"SIXTYSEVEN"
"SEVENTYSEVEN"
"EIGHTYSEVEN"
"NINETYSEVEN"
"ONEHUNDREDANDTWENTYSEVEN"
"ONEHUNDREDANDTHIRTYSEVEN"
"ONEHUNDREDANDFOURTYSEVEN"
"ONEHUNDREDTWENTYSEVEN"
"ONEHUNDREDTHIRTYSEVEN"
"ONEHUNDREDFOURTYSEVEN"
"TWENTYTWO"
"THIRTYTWO"
"FOURTYTWO"
"FIFTYTWO"
"SIXTYTWO"
"SEVENTYTWO"
"EIGHTYTWO"
"NINETYTWO"
"ONEHUNDREDANDTWENTYTWO"
"ONEHUNDREDANDTHIRTYTWO"
"ONEHUNDREDANDFOURTYTWO"
"ONEHUNDREDANDFIFTYTWO"
"ONEHUNDREDTWENTYTWO"
"ONEHUNDREDTHIRTYTWO"
"ONEHUNDREDFOURTYTWO"
"ONEHUNDREDFIFTYTWO"

as potential numbers at the end of the cipher. One of those numbers divided by 6.4 actually could give us the distance to Mt. Diablo (of the bomb Z later claimed he had never set-up); e.g. ONEHUNDREDANDTHIRTYTWO >>> 21.406 miles.

Length (letters) of potential radian terminology:

12.onepointzero
11.onepointone
11.onepointtwo
13.onepointthree
12.onepointfour
12.onepointfive
11.onepointsix
13.onepointseven
13.onepointeight
12.onepointnine
13.fourpointzero
12.fourpointone
12.fourpointtwo
14.fourpointthree
13.fourpointfour
13.fourpointfive
12.fourpointsix
14.fourpointseven
14.fourpointeight
13.fourpointnine

With a cipher length of 32 symbols, the radian terminology at the beginning could have between 18 and 21 letters, for example:

21."ONEHUNDREDTWENTYSEVEN"
21."ONEHUNDREDTHIRTYSEVEN"
21."ONEHUNDREDFOURTYSEVEN"
19."ONEHUNDREDTWENTYTWO"
19."ONEHUNDREDTHIRTYTWO"
19."ONEHUNDREDFOURTYTWO"
19."ONEHUNDREDFIFTYTWO"

giving us the direction (radian) 1.1, 1.2, 1.6, 1.3, 1.7, 1.8, 4.0, 4.4, 4.5, 4.9 (...3x3 plus 4x7 = 37 different spots on the map). Sadly I still do not see any (valid) solution for the cipher yet, thus just an idea. So far, the best I can come up with is something like

matching the cipher but the text not really ideal. Opinions?

In his little list letter, Z mentioned

"The Mt. Diablo Code concerns Radians + #inches along the radians".

I wonder if Z meant that literally?

Imagine a number, e.g. 3,467 ('threethousandfourhundredandsixtyseven') which is actualy 3.467 RAD or 198.6 degrees.

It is one thing to choose this direction, based on Mag. North, which would moreless be somewhat to the West (in this example). But if you then draw a circle and continue to 'walk' that arc for e.g. 3.467 inches, too, you will get to some very detailled spot on such map. Based on the diameter you choose for your 'circle', it might well be possible to describe any spot on such map by just giving the RAD value (equalling inches to follow the arc).

Like being able to give a detailled description but with unknown diameter (to us) of the navigation rose? Or the diameter being the size of the map he used?

Pretty certain that by giving a RAD value as well as a size/diameter (distance) navigation to any specific spot on the map is possible. Following this thought, the RAD value is actually chosen to describe both, the distance as well as the rad that is needed to get to that specific spot? Is that correct? As RAD not only shows a direction, but an 'arc' ending somewhere on the map?

"A railroad curve forms a circular arc of 9 degrees 36.7 minutes, the radius to the center line of the track being 2100 feet. If the gauge is 5 feet, find the difference in length of the two rails to the nearest half-inch."

..along the Radians...

'And all billiard players I shall have them play in a darkened dungen cell with crooked cues + twisted shoes.'

Found out today that this is a reference to another musical/theatre: There is a play called 'HERE's A HOW DEE DOO!', which is also called 'Twisted cues and elliptical balls'. You can imagine how surprised I was when I read that it is related to Gilbert & Sullivan (Mikado..). There even was a 'Paul Knight' featuring it, which finally left me stunning. Securing this theory is that Z had specifically referred 'billiard players'.

https://archive.org/stream/bodypolitic1 ... o_djvu.txt
(search for 'cues')

It is possible that 'our' Paul Knight, classmate of CJB, was involved in that play (you can play chess with me..my name is written on the bottom lid of a scotch tape). Finally this could be our guy..or if not (as it is from Toronto) it at least shows at which Theatre Z could have been involved at (showing both, 'Mikado' and 'Twisted cues and elliptical balls').

https://library.osu.edu/finding-aids/ea ... RI.SGS.xml
(search for 'twisted cues'..there is a 'program' described regarding the play)

I checked out the differences of original Sullivan's little list poetry and Z's Mikado letter..besides almost 20 errors in writing, some sentences had been modified by purpose or by lack of knowing the original text.

What is interesting somehow is that this poetry appears to be a riddle:

'And 'St -- 'St -- 'St -- and What's-his-name, and also -- well, you-know-who
The task of filling up the blanks I'd rather leave to you.'

Z modified the 'St' into 'Tut'..

Those are the modifications:

After his escape he resided is San Francisco. Certainly, his story was mentioned in the S.F. newspapers...and around the world.

I mentioned in another thread about his name being "13" characters..not saying he was a POI, just may a clue...the end of the "My Name is does end in Nam".

I posted about it at the ZK msg board, but for the life of me, cannot find it now. It was one of those posts where you think you are the first to discover something, come to find out you were not.

The movie "Rescue Dawn" with Christian Bale was based off of Dengler's story.

Hi-

I came across a reference to Danny Kaye having sung some Gilbert and Sullivan--and that he sometimes changed the lyrics. I think some of the arrangements were done by his wife, Sylvia Fine Kaye. Here is a reference to his four Gilbert and Sullivan records. Note the article on the right side about halfway down the page, "Gilbert and Sullivan and Danny Kaye." Note especially the last sentence of the second paragraph.

I was wondering if he ever sang the "Little List" song. I have done a bit of searching and tried to get my hands on these recordings but with no success. Maybe the collective efforts of the board can shed some light on whether or not Z may have used Danny Kaye as his inspiration for his fractured lyrics. It is a long shot but might be worth a try.

There is no doubt Zodiac used the Groucho version.

Zodiac heard "As Some Day it May Happen" quite often in order to memorize it, but, it is apparent he went by memory and not the written word.

Many thought Zodiac made up some of the lyrics to suit him and his potential victims, but that is just not the case.

Here is my best transcript Groucho version of "As Some Day it May Happen":

As some day it may happen that a victim must be found
I've got a little list I've got a little list

Of society offenders who might well be underground
and who never would be missed who never would be missed

There's the pestilential nuisances who write for autographs,
all people who have flabby hands and irritating laughs.

And all children who are up in dates and floor you with 'em flat,
and all persons who when shaking hands shake hands with you like that.

And all third persons who are spoiling tete a tetes insist,
they'd none of them be missed they'd none of them be missed.

There's the banjo serenader and the others of his race.
and the piano-organist, I've got him on the list.

And the people who eat peppermint and puff it in your face,
they never would be missed, they never would be missed.

And the idiout who praises with enthusiastic tone,
all centuries but this and every country but his own.

And the lady from the provinces who dresses like a guy,
and who doesn't think she dances but would rather like to try.

And that singular anomoly, the girl who's never kissed,
I don't think she'd be missed, I'm sure she'd not be missed.

And that nisi prius nuisance who just now is rather rife,
The judicial humorist, I've got him on the list.

All funny fellows, comic men and clowns of private life,
they'd none of them be missed they'd none of them be missed.

An apologetic statesmen of a compromising kind,
such as eh what do you call a thing-a-ma-bob and a like-wise, ah never mind.

And a tut tut tut and whats-his-name, and well, well you know who.
Ah the task of filling up the blanks I'd rather leave to you.

For it really doesn't matter whom you put upon the list, for they'd none of them be missed, they'd none of them be missed.
