No, not Gareth Penn. It was someone earlier than that. The newspaper article I saw mentioning him looked to be from the early 70's. I need to go look for it again. I should have bookmarked it before. He struck me as similar to him though.

I don't mean "obsessive" as a pejorative, but somehow, amateur investigator just doesn't have the punch to it, in my mind. This person was interested in using mathematics to unearth the identity of the Zodiac and was mentioned in at least one newspaper, in I believe the early 1970's. I thought he was interesting because you don't really hear about amateur Zodiac sleuths before the release of the Graysmith book, or at least, you don't hear as much about them. Does this guy sound familiar to anyone? I've been trying to relocate the article, but I have had no luck so far. He had a fairly unusual name if I can recall correctly. I thought he was interesting in part because he served as evidence that the case was consuming amateur sleuths long before Graysmith.
