Connection between Cecilia Shepard and Cheri Jo Bates

It was often assumed that Loma Linda student Cecilia Shepard, also a music major, had ties to music student Cheri Jo Bates. However there was often some doubts as there was no indication that CS had in fact attended classes in Riverside.

Finally found the piece: CS and CJB indeed went to the same organization - with roughly 500 miles of distance, this shows pretty accurately that both had known not only each other but most likely their killer, too. It also confirms the idea that Z had tried to get rid of the witnesses Darlene Ferrin and Cecilia Shepard. It further confirms the theory that Z had worn a mask because Cecilia, otherwise, would have had recognized him immediately.

Found this in the May 13, 1971, edition of the Pacific Union College Campus Chronicle:

"Bryan Hartnell, senior history major, urged. 'Don't get drafted. If they won't give you a I-O position, don't cop-out and take a I-A-O refuse induction and fight it through the courts, and go to jail if necessary. No soldiers, no war.'"

I talked to another Lake Berryessa witness, this is what he told me

I talked to another Lake Berryessa witness, the son mentioned in this police report (I believe most people know his name, but just in case, and to keep him from getting peppered with people contacting him, I redcated it)

He made some very specific statements to me about what he remembered.

1- The entire interaction was at around 100 yards apart, and lasted 30 seconds or less
2- He observed the suspect, and when he saw that he had no fishing pole, gun, or any kid of gear, he immediately felt that the person was out of place
3-He said that the man he saw was having difficulty navigating and moving along the terrain. He felt that he was heavy, out of shape, and that further bolstered his feeling that the man did not belong out there
4-He said that when the man noticed that he was there, he seemed to react to the gun the witness was carrying and turned around and went in a different direction.
5-Overall description 5ft8-5ft10. heavy, overweight, out of shape. He could not remember if he was wearing glasses
6- I sent witness photos of my suspect, William Mac Andrew. He said that the man he saw looked physically like him, face shape, hairstyle, body features, etc- but due to the distance, he could not clearly make out the facial features on the man he saw and could not rule Mac in or out as the man he saw.
7-Witness got the sense that the man he saw was older, in part due to his trouble physically navigating the terrain he was moving in, he felt that a younger more physically fit person would have not had as much trouble

That's it! He could not add anything else. Again, it lasted less than 30 seconds and was at a distance of 100 yards, so making a positive ID by the witness of ANY suspect will likely be impossible.

At the end of the day, I think that witness DID see Zodiac. His description of the man he saw does NOT seem to match the guy seen by the female sunbathers- a taller, physically fit guy

One of the sunbathing girls from Lake B being stalked by the mystery guy chimed in and sent me this, and she talks about some of the Zodiac suspects and whether they may have been who she saw:

Hi Mike, Yes I am THAT ******* a possible witness to the Lake Berryessa killer. I guess maybe some statute of limitations has expired because I've had a few people contact me. My identity and testimony at the time was under the agreement of secrecy as for years I was in fear of being identified and at risk. Obviously that criminal must be long dead by now.
You didn't name the photo of the man you sent. And of course, 50 years on, I don't know. There are several photos I have been sent that look like the man I saw. Yes the photo you included very much looks like the man I saw, but your photo shows him quite heavy, and the man I saw was thin. (This was in response to photo of William McDuff Andrew)
A Frenchman has 'identified' the killer as Lawrence Kane, and the photo is similar to my identikit but I don't feel it's him. There is a 1950s photo of Arthur Leigh Allen, and that 50s photo is very strongly similar to who I saw.
Photos of Gary Francis Poste show no resemblance.
So there's no real answer I can provide. The man I saw stalked 3 of us girls and followed us to the lake. We sunbathed on the cove right next to where the killings took place, and left an hour or so before the attacks began. The man followed us to the shoreline and observed us from the trees. That's about all I can offer.

I'd also wager clip-on sunglasses fixed peak of the hat. Those prison guard hat peaks are very short. Some Zodiac profiles points: - Cut-off techniques. - Flashlight distractions. - Understood jurisdiction issues. - Forensically aware of secretion status testing (no saliva). - Calmly walking by LE after shooting someone point-blank. - Has no problem communicating with LE whereas most would be doing the opposite. - Calls them pigs like EARONS did (JJD was a cop) as a ruse. - Story about killing a prison guard. - Gets Bryan and Cecilia down on their knees at gunpoint before going rear like an arrest giving them orders. - First Zodiac letter like a ballistics report. - Even talks like a cop sometimes in his letters "They have not complied...", "if they do not comply." - Knew firecrackers on July 4th would distract LE getting gunshot reports. Ferrin & Mageau BOTH thought their attacker was a cop.

Is it just me or is the E in Zodiac's "knife" written unusually? It reminds me of shorthand writing, which is a form of encryption.

The Napa Operator

Much has been made about the fact that only three people heard Zodiac's voice: Nancy Slover Bryan Hartnell Dave Slaight But, this isn't true. We also know that the PT&T operator who connected Zodiac to Slover also spoke to Zodiac for an indeterminate amount of time. At least, that is what we can surmise despite their being no official documentation. However, the operator who transferred Zodiac's call to Dave Slaight after the LB attack ALSO spoke to Zodiac. In fact, it's documented: https://www.zodiackiller.com/LBReport32.html The operator states that the "man had refused to give the number when he placed the call". So, it seems likely that Zodiac dialed the operator and asked for the police. Standard procedure at the time called for operators to ask for the nature of the call or emergency and what number the caller was calling from in case of disconnection. Zodiac repeatedly refused to provide the number until the operator relented and passed the call through. This is not insignificant. It's possible this woman had a longer interaction on the phone with Zodiac than Slover or Slaight. What insights or clues might she have had? My question is this: was any attempt made to speak with this operator? Has she ever been identified?
