If Z had gone to any other school than RCC, he might have went to John W North or Rubidoux. I checked the 1966 yearbooks, so far this is all I found:

The drawings of JWN High strongly remind me the weird drawings of Loma Linda yearbook.

Do you believe Zodiac knew Bates personally or had some connection to her?

I've always felt that Cheri might of had a connection to Z. Many murderers often have their first victims as being the most personal to them. A person who Bates knew would likely have been more trustworthy to her. Not to mention the killing was much more aggressive than his later attacks. Did he have anger towards Cheri?
What about you all?

Profiling the Bates Killer

I was going over some notes I made several years ago on a conversation I had with profiler Richard Walter. I had forgotten how on board he was with the notion that the Bates murder was a Power-Reassurance to Anger-Retaliatory profiling jump. The killer didn't start out that night with the intent to kill Bates. Rather, he had likely held fantasies about her being his girlfriend but was too awkward, socially inept, bookish and shy to approach her. So he devises a plan. He disables her car and waits for the correct moment to make his approach. He wants to be her knight in shining armor and succeeds in gaining her trust and getting her to walk with him in the dark. There, he professes his love for her and she tells him in no uncertain terms to get lost. His fantasies shattered, he boils over with anger and in order to save face, he has to kill her. I wonder if at that moment she realizes that her whole car thing had been a ruse. Like a typical AR, he ends the attack by rolling her over onto her face, so she cannot accuse him. Maybe he felt guilty for a while after killing her but ultimately, he decides she deserved it, thus rationalizing the crime in his own mind. Mr. Walter made it very clear that it would be highly unusual for a Power-Assertive killer like Zodiac to commit a crime like this or for a PA to become an AR. Thus, since Zodiac was a PA, he is very unlikely to have murdered Bates in such a personal way and then become the impersonal assassin type murderer he was in NorCal. (LB was the exception, NOT the rule up North.) Mike

This is the location of where the car was parked on the night of the murder. A bit further away from the Library than first speculated. (This is information that was revealed in the History Channel Documentary).

The NORCO thread

Joseph Bates worked as a machinist at National Ordnance Laboratory - Corona. Or so the Internet tells me. NOLC and the NORCO base had a long and interesting history. It opened as a luxury resort 10 months before the Great Depression. The Navy used its as a hospital during World War II. In the 1960s, it was mainly used to test Navy missiles, warheads, and other weapons. It also had one of the most powerful computer facilities of its time. That brings up a lot of interesting possibilities with regard to Zodiac. Some theorize that Zodiac's connection to the Bates family comes through her father's work at NORCO. I found the following document online. It is a government report that contains a treasure trove of history about the NORCO base. It was made to determine if the site was eligible for historical preservation. If you think Zodiac came into contact with the Bates family through NORCO, this report probably will not change your mind. Random Riverside Thoughts

I was having some insight into the case this morning. If the poem is written at a different time from the attack, which seems likely to me, then: 1) There's been a thought that the killer in these was a random person, possibly attending the races, who stalked Cheri that day and killed her that night. That would seem out the window. 2) The killer seems to know her car. So most likely an acquaintance or a local stalker. I suppose it could be a random student who was in the library regularly, saw her, decided to target her, disabled her car, waited for her, and proceeded from there. But why would a random killer choosing victims randomly wait on her? It doesn't seem like Zodiac was that particular in other cases. That would make Zodiac one of three things:

a Cheri acquaintance a stalker of Cheri local to the area. a person regularly in the library who decided to write letters to the police about a crime he heard about but did not commit.
