Has anyone come across any birth records for the real Richard Reed Marshall? The reason I'm asking is because I'm starting to think there was no hitchhiker with that name and that Dickey changed his name because, well, Joe Don Dickey is not a good name for a gay guy in San Francisco and not a good name for the entertainment industry. I have looked like crazy and found no actual birth record for a Richard Reed Marshall. Perhaps Dickey just made up a tale of a hitchhiker that he had killed and taken his identity. A story like that would probably gain him some respect with the crowd he ran with in the bay area. But it would be nice if we could confirm if there was a Richard Reed Marshall or not.

Galaxy500 found a matching address in San Jose (1309 Oakland Rd) for both Richard R. Marshall and Joe D. Dickey, so there is no doubt that he was both of these people.

The military records that we have on page 2 of this thread say that Joe Don Dickey entered the service June 8 1944. He would have been 18 years old. D-Day, the beginning of the end of the war, was June 6, 1944. The war officially ended September 2, 1945.

The education information on those military records say that Joe Don Dickey had two years of high school. It's possible that he had skipped a grade or two and had actually graduated. It's hard to say without looking at a high school year book and there are not any that old from Hamlin High School posted at Classmates.

It does seem like something doesn't add up but without confirmation of his high school years it's hard to say if that is because he was trying to be sneaky about something or had something to hide. He easily could have had a flair for the dramatic and the mysterious. Look at Arthur Leigh Allen who seemed to go out of his way to make himself look guilty. ALA apparently enjoyed the attention even though it was negative attention.

Could he have graduated HS at the age of 15??? He also may have been going to college for a year or two in Phoenix, AZ in 1946 and then possible the Army in 1948.

Here are some things Galaxie500 has posted worth mentioning:
1946 article from the Arizona Republic:

Marfa, TX is a little bit southeast of El Paso. I don't know if this is even our guy, but I'd imagine so. If it is, then he was in college in Phoenix for a short time and then must have went into the Army in 1948?

EDIT: By 1948 it looks as though that Army base had become an airport. And Marshall working for Boeing Airplane Co. in Seattle in 1954, I'd say there is a good chance he was working at the airport in Marfa, TX in 1948.

He has someone there named Galaxie500 who posted a few of the same articles I've posted in this thread and they were posted six months ago or more ago. I did not think to look at Oph's for anything new on Marshall because he was the one who started this thread.

There is an article that Galaxie posted from the Abilene Reporter News July 21, 1950 that says Richard Reed Marshall of Hamlin has volunteered to join the Navy. It was posted Jan. 9, 1016, a little more than halfway down the page.

http://zodiackiller.forumotion.com/t327 ... r-articles

I went back to Ancestry but did not find a Richard Marshall connected to Hamlin. The date of the article is interesting because I think it predates the SS app filled out by Marshall when he was living in Seattle Washington. If you look at that app it gives a birthdate of April 7, 1928 and the box to the left says that Marshall was 26 years old when he filled out the app. That would mean the app was filled out in 1954. The date at the bottom is barely legible.

Galaxie posted quite a few articles that I did not, some of them placing Marshall/Dickey in places that have not been known before now. The Marshall threads are worth a read if you want more info on the guy.

Dickey/Marshall may have gone AWOL from the service and that is the reason for the name change(s) and also the change in his date of birth. By making himself two years younger he would have been too young to have been drafted into WWII.

We do not know anything about his military service except that he told the MIJ he had served in WWII and Korea, that could have been a lie. Graysmith said in the Yellow Book that Marshall had been in the Navy but that is not borne out by the military information we do have. That says Dickey enlisted June 8 1944 when Dickey was 18 years old. It does not give a branch of the service but it does say he was a private and the enlistment city was Camp Wolters.

The equivalent of private in the Navy is seaman, were Dickey in the Navy the military register would have said seaman. Camp Wolters, now Fort Wolters, was an Army installation back in 1944.

Coincidentally there was another Joe Dickey, Joe Ben Dickey was born in Texas March 26, 1926, just 13 days after Joe Don Dickey. He was in the Navy during the Korean conflict.
