The Zodiac's conceptualisation of his chosen symbol

So, this:

variously interpreted by Zodiac researchers to represent a gunsight, to be a symbol merely copied (for no especial reason) from the branding of the Zodiac watch, as well as a number of other less readily accepted conceptualisations. But these start out from how we choose to conceptualise the symbol. What, then, of how The Zodiac himself perceived its 'meaning'?

I think we can get close to the author's conceptualisation through careful study of the two key instances where it is clear The Zodiac was using this symbol for a purpose other than as just his signature.

These occur, firstly, on the 'Death Machine' letter of 9 November 1969, as:

and, secondly, on the Phillips 66 map sent with the Z32 cipher on 26 June 1970:

We often spend so much time focused on the killer, that we overlook the victims.

53 years ago tonight, two youngsters with their whole lives ahead of them were gunned down in cold blood simply to satisfy the diabolical and narcissistic needs of a serial killer.

Here's to their memory and to the continued hope that their killer will be identified and brought to justice.

Zodiac crosshair symbol

I do not suspect that Z was aware of this, but the ancient Greek Linear B symbol for the syllable "ka" resembles the crosshairs symbol. However, "ka" does not extend the radii beyond the circle boundary. I include this to demonstrate just how old that 'logogram' is to humanity.

Research Project

I am writing to recruit people with high level computer and recruiting skills. I want to form a research project in which we “scrape”ancestry.com and other similar websites to create a database of white males between 25 and 45 in the Bay area at the time of the Zodiac. A user named Barry began this back in the day, but unfortunately he gave up and deleted his data. I think with the computing tools available now, we can create a list of under 10,000 names to begin to research.

It is a very simple hypothesis. The reason why these four are so cold is that the perps had some degree of forensic awareness knowledge likely obtained in relation to some training in law enforcement. As cold cases whittle down and the perps exposed I think more LE will appear and that will be the tightest grouping for notorious cases ("how did the perp get away with all that?" type of cold cases).

It seems Dennis Rader had the ambition to be in law enforcement in some capacity, got degrees in legal administration, and experience in home security but didn't achieve any greater position in life than a glorified dog-catcher. He was obviously trying though.

Joseph James DeAngelo had two degrees in police science and justice. He was described as FBI candidate quality by colleagues. So high end of forensic awareness here but caught.

Zodiac and LISK seem to fit this pattern well, IMO. Zodiac is beating EARONS because Zodiac has bigger forensic problems IMO. LISK however is more modern than them all and that is why I think someone as advanced as JJD if not more so. Someone who spends a great deal of time on the water and possibly in search and rescue.
