Here is an S.F. Examiner article from a few days earlier with the same date format and font. Could be the source of "Some of them fought" and "It was horrible."

99% sure it was the SF Chronicle. Theforeigner noticed it and I would say it’s pretty much confirmed.
This person obviously read that newspaper and was a fan of Avery’s.
