It’s very sad that because of mistakes made early on that these two girls were not identified until now. Originally the two were thought to be a girl and boy and probably sister and brother, this was back in the late 70’s when they were found. Then in the early 2000’s it was determined that they were not related. It was not until last year that more DNA tests were run and it came back that both were female. So for decades people were looking for a missing sister and brother to match them to.

YarbChris, a member at this forum, had the two featured on his website for a few years. It was speculated that the two might be children of members of Jim Jones church and were killed when the mass suicides happened in Guyana. Both events happened at roughly the same time. Jones had his church in Ukiah for many years and quite a few members were still there when the suicides took place.

When I went to the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office to speak with a detective about the two, he told me that Kenneth Parnell was a strong suspect in the case. Kenneth Parnell, if you remember, was the man who kidnapped Steven Stayner and kept him for 7 years before kidnapping another young boy from Ukiah, Timmy White. Steven bravely hitchhiked to Ukiah with Timmy not long after Timmy was taken.

Knowing now that the two that were found in 1979 on Highway 20 just west of Willetts, are both females I rather doubt that Parnell had anything to do with their murders. He was interested in young boys.

Coddingtown Mall where the girls were headed when they went missing is just a half a block from the Empire Ice Arena where two of the SRHM victims were last seen. Of course we don’t know if they ever actually made it to the mall and could have been hitchhiking east on River Road to get to Highway 101 to go to the mall when they were taken.

Here are the death certificates I got for the two back when I spoke to the sheriff. I got them for YarbChris to post on his website which is no longer active. They are the saddest damn things I’ve ever seen. I am so glad the two have been properly identified and their families have a bit of resolution to their disappearance.
