Found this in the Dec. 1, 1964 Redondo Reflex. It mentions another slaying that might be the work of the person who killed Joyce Gail Walker.

The other victim is Ms. Beatrice Cawdrey, aged 50. She was apparently murdered June 5, 1964. Her home address was 2220 Clark Lane, Redondo Beach, but she was apparently found at the address of 804 Strand in a beach home. Also strangled.

Z never used strangulation (at least in his confirmed murders).

The Cheri Jo Bates confession letter, widely regarded as written by Zodiac, says: "SHE SQUIRMED AND SHOOK AS I CHOAKED HER"

Fits as previously mentioned, however…..never written about in Z letters, can’t use it without taunts written.

Have the 1964 Walker and Cawdrey murders ever been solved?

What’s haunting is the March 1971 Zodiac letter.

Zodiac: "I do have to give them credit for stumbling across my riverside activity, but they are only finding the easy ones, there are a hell of a lot more down there."

There’s another article in the November 29, 1964 issue of the L.A. Times. https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/166092559/

Looks like it requires a subscription to read. But the article is entitled, "’Limping man’ still sought in girl’s death".

The machine translation preview of the article is somewhat garbled but it appears part of the article states: "The suspected killer was seen talking to Ms Walker beside her damaged car after she struck a telephone pole in nearby El Segundo on her way home from an office."

I corrected a few of the garbled words and had to guess what the missing words in the preview originally stated…

Thanks Seagull!

I found this about Beatrice Cawdrey. From the San Bernadino Sun Telegram, June 7, 1964.

It’s interesting that Walker and Cawdrey were both manual strangulations. Manual strangulation is also how the author of the Cheri Jo Bates confession describes his method (i.e. choking).

Also, I wonder if that beach house where housekeeper Cawdrey was found was actually a vacant rental property (decribed as a guest house). Not clear from the article. I wonder if the killer was a squatter who was secretly crashing at that beach house and the housekeeper walked in on the killer.

It also says there were no signs of a struggle. Interesting.

Hi Seagull

I found another article about Walker — do you have access to download this article? https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/51766999/

The title is "Seek ‘Man With Limp’ in Space Beauty Stab Death" November 28, 1964, The Times from San Mateo

The machine translation preview has phrases like "her car was disabled."

Thanks!

FYI. Observation: The San Mateo article may be a duplicate from the UPI wire since it has similar body text to the first article posted in the thread.

A movie called "The Strangler" was released in April of 1964 — prior to both the Cawdrey and Walker strangulations

If the Walker crime was never solved, I wonder if the Manhattan Beach or California police still have the sketch in high resolution in their files they could provide.

Interesting how the lips appear to be slightly agape in the sketch from the low resolution microfiche scan. It’s also impossible to tell the hair color from the newspaper scan — the sockets are black so hair color is not reliable.

I found another LA Times article with a composite drawing of the man with a limp. It’s not a very good copy of the drawing. However there is more info in this article that leads me to believe that Joyce may have known her attacker. Her body was covered with a bedspread when found. Usually the only time a killer does that is when they know their victim. It also sounds like she had been drinking on the night of her murder, she was in a minor accident which is apparently how she came in contact with the limping man. Alcohol clouds judgement, had she been sober she may not have accepted a ride with a stranger.

The article also says she told her father of a job opportunity in France which she was pretty excited about. Perhaps she had been dating someone in the LA area who did not want her to go to France so they killed her to stop her from going???

One could conclude from the article that coming from a bar, Joyce had a few drinks and her driving may have been impaired. She could have either fallen asleep or due to alcohol lost control and jumped a curb. But what’s interesting about the article is that the responding police officers didn’t arrest Joyce for suspicion of driving while intoxicated — and there is no mention of a ticket for drunk driving. I know it was the 1960s, but still there were laws in place at the time — even if less strict than today. But the officers were not in the right jurisdiction either — so perhaps they couldn’t issue a ticket or make an arrest even if they wanted to.

Also interesting is the left front bumper damage officers observed on the suspect’s car. In theory, the suspect could have nudged his left bumper against the right rear of Joyce’s car and she would also have lost control. In that scenario, the "limp man" could have caused the wreck.

Unfortunately, the articles are too vague to draw many conclusions.
