Sorry Daniel, it doesn’t ring any bells. Besides the measuring instrument there is a plant called Jacob’s Staff. It’s a desert plant whose botanical name is Fouquieria splendens. It is most commonly known as Ocotillo and there is a town in California by the name of Ocotillo. It’s in Imperial County near the Mexican border.

Interesting that the wiki page for a Jacob’s staff has strong references to navigation and angle calculations. Certainly not unrelated to the world of Z theories.
