My POI changed his name. He was born with one name and used it until about 1965. He lived in the Bay Area at that time. Then, after moving approximately 1000 miles away in 1970, he was known by another name. Of course, I find this suspicious.

I understand that California law requires petitions to change a name to be published in the local newspaper. Thus, name changes are public record. I could simply read the legal section of every newspaper in California for half a decade or so. I think this is going to be tough for me to do . . .

Does anybody have any suggestions about how I can find out information about a name change in California when I don’t know in which county it occurred or exactly when it occurred?

You could subscribe to newspapers.com

I get 33,000 results for the search query, "change of name" in California for the year 1970. You could narrow it right down by adding the person’s name(s), of course.

https://www.newspapers.com/search/#quer … p_place=CA

There’s a 7-day free trial on offer there, but you’ll have to give your card details, and then cancel before the end of the trial so as not to get charged.

I tried that already. I got no results for a specifuc name search. And an exhaustive search is more tha. I can handke right now.

The problem is that I bekieve I am trying to prove a negative. I don’t think he did a judicial name change. The point was to evade detection.

I sit in front of a computer 8 hours every night at work so if you want, I can help look for info. BTW, people changing their name in those days was not uncommon. Most criminals had several aliases.

A few minutes ago on a toilet not very far, far away….
