Hi all,

Anyone know how much confidence law enforcement has that the fingerprints lifted from Bryan’s car were those of the Zodiac? I have heard these referenced a few times in recent years, including in the recent Monster: Zodiac podcast (they have apparently been compared to Larry Kane), but have not heard whether LE is as certain of them as they are the ones left in Stine’s cab.

I don’t see how they could be certain at all. Unless there is a match, it’s anyone’s guess.

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

Does anyone know what direction the prints were on the door, and how low they were? In other words, were they in such a way that they could only have been left by someone squatting or kneeling down in front of the door? A person standing and touching the door down low would leave "upside down" prints.

I don’t know if it has anything to do with LB, but since it was Narlow who said it, possibly, but he said when taking prints from a suspect it is important that they "roll" the fingers, which I’m guessing means they need the sides of the fingertips to make a proper identification.

I’ve heard that a fingerprint of the left hand, left on the Gia, matches the fingerprint of the left hand from the taxi cab. Apparently, there are matching scars. If accurate, that would conclusively link the LB stabbings and Paul Stine’s murder.

I was wondering what "Gia" referred to until I understood you meant Hartnell’s car! It’s "Ghia" with an "h" ;)

Hi Chaucer, do you have any idea where you heard this breakthrough about matching left hand prints from the Napa and San Francisco crime scenes?

I believe the fingerprint examiner on the Monster podcast episode entitled "Rabbit Holes".

If he squatted and put his left hand on the Karmann-Ghia door to write his message, that also means he was a righty, for what it’s worth.

Yes, and in the case of Paul Stine, he could have placed his left hand on the top of the door to balance as he leaned in to wipe the inside down.

Thanks for your time Chaucer. I re-listened to that episode though and I did not hear mention of this discovery. It would be monumental to learn that police matched crime scene prints or letter prints or anything of the sort, but unfortunately I’m pretty sure that officially no prints of the Zodiac have been confirmed. Even the palm print on the Exorcist letter that did not match Arthur Leigh Allen is not a confirmed Zodiac print. Why that comparison was even drawn is difficult to imagine (at some point they must have lost faith in the authenticity of the Exorcist letter). The only potential match claimed that I can find record of comes from Gary Stewart whose work on this case has proven unreliable. Stewart believes that one of the prints from the cab (which may show a scar or a seam of airplane cement) matches a print from his deceased father Earl Van Best Jr, but only when examined in reverse (which for many nullifies the theory). Butterfield takes great joy in discrediting him on this page if you are interested. https://zodiackillerfacts.com/zodiac-th … y-stewart/

Sorry. Wrong episode. It was from the earlier episode entitled "Trails". The relevant time is from 26:38 – 28:58. In re-listening, it now appears that it was Kane’s booking fingerprints that had the scar, and that the latent prints from the Ghia did NOT show a scar. Interesting.

Interesting indeed. Thank you kindly!
