Is their any verification, other than location, that the cigarette butt was from the person observed smoking in the alley? My experience with college campuses is that people would regularly smoke in locations of this sort. I would assume the alley was not cleaned for cigarette butts every day.

Not that I’m aware of, but I would assume they would have collected all cigarette butts in the area and as far as I can tell
from the FBI report they didn’t have many butts to test so I would guess there were only a couple of butts or so in the
area of the crime scene.
