I believe it was a Union 76 near the phone booth whence the call was made. Regardless which brand it was, does anyone know if there is any documentation about this business? I’d like to know the hours of operation, the names of employees, and whether any of those witnesses were interviewedby law enforcement (or otherwise).

Union 76 was a gas station owned by Union Oil and the origin of the "76" brand. Ironically, the "76" brand was based on the July 4th 1776 United States Declaration of Independence – rather a fortuitous or otherwise choice by the Zodiac Killer.

Locals called it Joe’s Union Service Station, address was 700 Tuolumne and Springs, although it was then Sylvia’s Union Gas Station. Then apparently Nick Houtz’s Union station later or something like that. Located on the northeast corner, It now occupied by a real estate office. My understanding was the the business was closed at that time of night.

Do we know the names of any of the employees? I know times were different back then, but I’m wondering if any of the regular employees could’ve had a key to the place. Maybe hiding out there after making the call. Maybe even hiding a car in ine of the repair bays.
