Apologies if there’s already a thread for miscellaneous photos of the scene. If there is, I couldn’t find it in my currently caffeine-deficient state.
I stopped by the site last weekend on the way to Pt. Reyes to eat a goat and provolone sandwich. As I pulled into the turn-out, I observed a slightly larger than fist sized chunk of obsidian that had apparently been carefully placed on one of the wooden posts of the guardrail structure. I photographed the specimen in situ with the only camera I had, my iPhone. I picked it up to examine it briefly and entertained the notion of taking it with me, because I used to collect obsidian as a kid. In the end, I decided to leave there. I have no hypothesis as to who put it there or why.

From a distance, it first appeared to be a chunk of asphalt, but if you look past the other stuff clinging to it you’ll see the characteristic fracture patterns of obsidian.

There is at the very least some nice Zync associated with obsidian in the context of California.

Casa Diablo, California
Casa Diablo is a location in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Mono County, eastern California, USA. Casa Diablo Hot Springs was named “House of the Devil”, by early explorers, for it’s boiling hot springs, rising steam and geysers.
This locale is noted as a Native American mining and manufacturing site specializing in obsidian materials.[1] Use of materials from this site is noted at least as early as the Millingstone Horizon.[2] The coastal Chumash people traded for material from this Obsidian source.
It became a stage stop along the Bishop Creek to Bodie stagecoach route in 1878. It was a relay station for the route to the mining camps of Mammoth City, Mill City, Mineral Peak and Pine City. In 1881, Casa Diablo stage station ceased operating and was later used for other business as a trading post, a seasonal resort, a tavern, a gas station, a grocery store, a hardware store and a lumber yard. In 1983, it was transformed into a geothermal electric generating plant.

Spiritual Meaning of Black Obsidian
By Darlene Zagata, last updated June 11, 2013
Black obsidian is a type of natural glass. Obsidian forms when hot volcanic lava becomes submerged in water. It is composed of silica dioxide and has a glassy appearance. Of the "New Age" stones, obsidian is considered one of the most important spiritual teachers and is referred to as the "stone of truth."
History
In the Middle Ages, black obsidian was used to drive out demons and evil spirits. It was also used to make spears, knives, and arrowheads.
Metaphysical Properties
Obsidian is used to aid in removing doubt and negative thoughts. It is also used to ward off psychic attacks and for divination. Obsidian is known as the Crystal of Truth and helps with issues of honesty and truth.
Healing
Obsidian is beneficial for ailments relating to digestion and helps to reduce food cravings. Its healing properties also include aiding vision, arthritis, and hardening of the arteries.
Magical Properties
Spheres of obsidian, such as in crystal balls, are used for accessing the subconscious. Obsidian absorbs and destroys negative energy such as anger, criticism, and fear, and may be used in protection or centering rituals.
Feng Shui
In Feng Shui, obsidian is used in the North area for personal journey and in the Center for grounding and protection.
Associations
Obsidian is associated with the root and third eye chakras as well as the planet Saturn. It is also associated with the zodiac signs of Scorpio and Sagittarius.

Zeb. Hell of a good photo.
Say – can you make sense of this one? Is it photographed facing west….? It’s a bit confusing.

Awesome photo! Love your photography style.
Just for clarification, that bulk of trees on the left by the large power structure is the entrance to Lake Herman (heading towards Vallejo from Benicia).

That photo in the newspaper article you show would be heading in the direction of Vallejo. The road goes down that way—up towards Benicia.

Thanks T., it does, doeesn’t it. Ah ha.
So a car coming up that road, shining it’s headlights up toward the turn-out……? I see.
Thank you, everyone. I took the photo in the middle of LHR while riding my motorcycle, using a GoPro set to JPEG mode. In this case the "eye" was involved only in post processing.

Update: 8/2/14
The guardrail has been thoroughly tagged by people suffering from chronic unoriginality and lack of spelling skills. Observed Saturday was this example, in which the anonymous questioner asks, "Who is Zodica?" I for one have never heard of this Zodica fella. I do not believe he is real.
