Thanks. Traveller1st did an amazing job on the graphics. Morf was tenacious and prescient in discovering and developing the EAR/ONS/GSK Ground Zero in the Dawes and Dolcetto area of Rancho Cordova. I was glad he asked me to take a look at what he was doing and help with the research and then the creation with Trav of a Ground Zero map and fact sheet.

Now that GSK has been identified as Joseph James DeAngelo, IMO Morf has been proven correct in his thesis that GSK grew up in and/or was familiar with this area and near it as an adult, as JJD did in fact live here from ages 13 to 18 (all in homes 0.5 to 1.9 miles from Ground Zero), went to Middle School – Jr. High (0.6 miles to Ground Zero) and High School (10 miles to GZ) in this area and right before the EAR crime spree started in this Ground Zero, JJD came back to this area to go to school at Cal State at Sacramento (7.7 miles to GZ)and then his then wife also went to school in this area at American River College (6.7 miles to GZ).

Yes no doubt he probably started young. With JJD it might have been a little different, because after High School graduation (or GED) in 1964, he enlisted in the US Navy for 4 years.

After getting back into civilian life, he appears to have entered in at least 1974 a disturbed period, with behavior similar to a troubled teen, exhibiting the characteristics of what former FBI agent and serial killer profiler called the homicidal trilogy, which for JJD as the GZ EAR and VR included fires (or in his specific case vandalism and destruction), abuse and killing of animals (killing dogs brutally), sexually acting out (peeping Tom, obscene phone calls, stalking) and crime (prowling, break ins, burglary).

Yes Zam I think it is an important, somewhat neglected and still largely unexplained aspect of the case. At least 16 EAR crimes in the UC Davis and surrounding six county Valley and East Bay area.

A possible UC Davis and surrounding six county Valley and East Bay connection was almost never mentioned on the EAR/ONS message boards or in press about the case, neither in the years before this arrest or since the arrest.

But working with Morf on a different POI, we developed info on a cluster of attacks centered around the UC Davis campus, the City of Davis and the surrounding six county Valley and East Bay area. The Sacramento crime cluster, from 1976 (or 1974) to 1978, and the Southern California crime cluster (1979 to 1986) got a lot of recognition and discussion. This crime cluster much less so.

Our then POI attended UC Davis and we highlighted this crime cluster, and speculated that whoever EAR/ONS was, he likely had some ties to this area and knowledge of it, perhaps by attending UC Davis. Initial reports were that Joseph James DeAngelo did attend UC Davis.

Note: The graphic says 1977 to 1979, because I think there was one 1977 attack in this area, but essentially the Davis – Valley and East Bay attack cluster ran from June 1978 until July 1979, then GSK shifted to Southern California.

But based on new information, it appears Joseph James DeAngelo only took an extension course(s) at U Cal Davis, which likely only minimal contact with the campus or perhaps none at all.

Thus it is not really clear why JJD targeted this area the way he did. Perhaps he did have some familiarity with UC Davis from the extension course or otherwise. As the VR he seemed to explore rural areas and small towns. Perhaps when things got very hot in Sacramento for the EAR, with maximum police deployment and publicity, the rural areas, small towns and bedroom suburbs of the Valley and East Bay might have been more appealing.

My theory is after the February 1978 murder of USAF Sgt. Brian Maggiore and his wife Katie things got even hotter for the EAR in Sacramento. And it was in April 1978 that the sketch of the Maggiore murder suspect was released, and that sketch looks very much like JJD. especially the sketch, which looked very much like JJD. And it is in June of 1978 that the EAR seems to leave Sacramento and start his crime cluster in Davis and the surrounding six county area. So he might have been primarily drive by a desire to leave Sacramento, where the sketch was mostly distributed and awareness of his crimes and the sketch were very high among the police, press and public, and go an area not as aware of him or the sketch.

All the investigators had to do was go to where the early attracts happened 40 years ago, head to the nearest strip club, and find EARONS sitting there!

I think the keys were the increased heat on the EAR in Sacramento, more police patrols, more media coverage, more public awareness, and in particular, the February 1978 Maggiores murder and the April 16, 1978 release of the Maggiore murder suspect sketch, which very much looks like JJD. I think JJD now needed to strike outside of Sacramento, and for whatever reason, choose the Davis – six county Valley and East Bay area.

I think this is the key sequence of events:

I’d be interested if you would start a thread outlining some of the SNAFUs in the investigations you think were made. Others could pitch in too.

This kind of error identification could be of interest to investigators like Paul Holes, who may have input on LE computer-mapping of, and investigation liaison advice for, multi-jurisdiction crimes going forward.

(We’ve also got to take into account that the greater Sacramento area and nearby cities and highways were a hotbed of insane criminal activity for LE to cope with).

Those 8 attack’s in The East Bay. Concord, Walnut Creek, Danville & San Ramon. I sincerely hope we learn more. These 4 towns were semi close, and if you lived in one, you went to the others.
DVC = Diablo Valley College is in Pleasant Hill, between Concord & Walnut Creek. A seedy topless place called The Wicked Eye with female dancers was in San Ramon, we heard he liked those type of places. I’m not sure if it was still opened in the late 70’s? I’m sure there were other places? Just thinking out loud, what the draw might of been to Contra Costa County towns.

There was also Sun Valley Mall in Concord, a place he could people watch?

San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley are all very easy commutes from these areas. There are plenty of seedy places in Oakland and San Francisco is famous for its’ North Beach area and the topless bars made famous by Carole Doda.

When Bart became operative, it made it even easier for people to get to most of these destinations very easily.

Good observations. I don’t know if we can say why GSK picked a new area specifically, but I have a theory on why he decided to stop attacking in Sacramento and move to a new area. What do you think of my theory?
