My name is Patrick Béland. I’m from Québec, Canada.
I believe I have cracked the 340 cipher.
The Zodiac Killer uses phonetic spelling, anagrams and misspelled words. It reads as follows:
LIE – SO – I – LAFT(LAUGHED) – SHAOW(SHOW) – OR – COLD – THOSE – IN -ICE – BOH(BOW) – DART – SLOT – WITH – AHAL(AHA) – I – LOOK – LIKE – A – COOLLE(COOL) – BOYA(BOY) – SLAYER – SAEF(SAFE) – LOOT – WO(WHO) – KELE(KILL) – IOTERY(LOTTERY) – TESOET(TEST) – HALB(HALT or HELP) – IS – TOOT(TOO) – AWAI(AWAY) – AAS(AS) – TWO – IOE(?) – HOLY – CNAL(CANAL) – PAARC(PARK) – SLOLT(SLOT) – EO(?) – EDTA(?) – I – SOBTA(?) – IO(?) – ALL – I – LOOK – CEDAT(SEDATE) – OLE – WAY- I – SEND – OOOS(YOU) – BOOC(BOOK OR BOO) – TIE – I – SEA(SEE) – OOS(YOU) – I – LODE(LOAD) – ASAL(ALAS) – AHLCS(CLASH) – AED(AHEAD) – TTTKE(?) – I – WECLOA(WELCOME) – OOO(YOU) – I – TAOYLLA(TELL YA) – DA(THE) – HEROAY(HERO) – IS – A – OTATL(TOTAL) – STI(STY) – CADB(CAB) – TOO – LIOS(SOIL) – I – WOE – TOL(TOLL) – AH(A) – SYCLEI(CYCLE) ID(I) – SHALL – HIYA(GREET) – IT – FOLLOW – THOSE – TRICKY – DYNODE(DIE NOTE) – TYTS(BITS) – SELCOT(CLOSET) – LATO – KIS(KISS) – BTL
Lie so I laughed show or cold those in ice bow dart slot with aha I look like a cool boy slayer safe loot who kill lottery test -halt or help – is too away as two (ioe) holy canal park slot (eo) (edta) I (cobta) (io) all I look sedate ole way I send you -book or boo – tie I see you I load a lac clash ahead t-key I welcome you I tell ya the hero is a total sty cab too soil I woe toll a cycle I shall greet it follow those tricky die note bits Scott Lato kiss
The substitution key has allowed me to solve the map cipher also:
YA(YEAH) I SHOT _ IS OK _ OEOWA(WHOEVER) CEE(SEE) AE(A) SLYIAA(SLAYER) FIA(FIRE)
Yeah I shot is ok whoever see a slayer fire
What do you think?
I just sent my solution to the fbi.
Hi Albator,
It’s always good to give it a try, but I think if anyone solves it, it will read clearly. That’s not to say some of the words may be right, but I do believe when it is solved correctly, it will have (somewhat) of a narrative flow.
Welcome!
How come then that the same substitution key has allowed me to solve the map cipher also? How do you explain that?
Take a look at the first words: YA – I – SHOT – IS -OK…. what are the odds?
I had to edit my message cause I made an error in my transcription
After (cobta) no (e) follows (io) so I took it off
Sorry bout that
HALB may not be for HALT but for HELP
Help is too away (makes more sense)
IOE seems to be the plural IO
IO = Asshole?
Well I’ve watched the 4th episode of The hunt for the Zodiac killer, and from the little peek that we had at the end of Craig Bauer’s solution, I could tell that he didn’t cracked the 340 cipher. In his solution, some symbols represent more than one letter. This is called improvisation. In my solution, each symbol represent only one letter. No improvisation.
And I got this:
– Lie so I laft(laughed)
– Cold those in ice
– Boh(bow) dart slot with aha
– I look like a cool boy
– A slayer
– I look sedate ole way
– I send ooos(you) booc(book or boo) tie
– I sea oos(you)
– I lode(load)
– I shall hiya(greet) it
– Follow those tricky dynode(die note) tyts(bits)
+ the map cipher: Ya(yeah) I shot is ok oeowa(whoever) see ae(a) slyiia(slayer) fia(fire)
+ the fact that the contents in the cipher are similar to those in the Bus-bomb letter: reference to a lie, reference to his look.
I think it offers enough compelling evidence that I have cracked the 340 cipher.
Yes, there are parts that doesn’t read clearly. This for instance: WOKELEIOTERYTESOET
It can only mean two things:
1. Either it’s mumbo jumbo to throw people of
2. Or it does say something, but my English is not good enough for me to figure out what it is.
But it’s not even important. The key element of the solution is at end.
ID- SHALL – HIYA – IT – FOLLOW – THOSE – TRICKY – DYNODE – TYTS
9 words in a row that are readable followed by a word that isn’t: SELCOT
It must mean that it’s an anagram then. At first I thought there was only one serious possibility. But now, I realized that there are two.
1- Closet (secret). Followed by a family name: Lato. Closet Lato. Secret Lato… kiss.
2-Telcos (a telecommunications company). At the end of the cipher you have BTL, which could be an acronym for "Bell Telephone Laboratories". It could indicate that the killer worked for a telephone company. Perhaps Pacific Bell.
Lato: relatively rare, the name can be of Italian or Polish origin. In Italian, it means: Side.
(Follow those tricky die note bits telcos side???)
People should be working on this solution. Experts should take a look at this.
LIE – SO – I – LAFT(laughed) – SHAOW(show) – OR – COLD – THOSE – IN – ICE – BOH(bow) – DART – SLOT – WITH – AHAL(aha) – I – LOOK – LIKE – A – COOLLE(cool) – BOY – A – SLAYER – SAEF(safe?) – LOOT -WOKELEIOTERYTESOET(?) – HALB(halt or help?) – IS – TOOT(too?) – AWAI(a way or away?) – AAS(as?) – TWO – IOE(?) – HOLY – CNAL(canal or clan?) – PAARC(park?) – SLOLT(slot?) – EO – EDTA(date?) – I – SOBTA(boast?) – IO(to?) – ALL – I – LOOK – CEDAT(sedate) – OLE – WAY – I – SEND – OOOS(you) – BOOC(book or boo?) – TIE – I – SEA(see) – OOS(you) – I – LODE(load) – ASAL(alas?) – AHLCS(clash?) – AED(ahead?) -TTTKE(?) – I – WECLOA(welcome?) – OOO(you) – I – TAOYLLA(tell ya?) – DA(the?)- HEROAY(hero?) – IS – A – OTATL(total?) – STI(sty?) – CADB(cab?) – TOO – LIOS(soil?) – I – WOE – TOL(toll?) – AH(a)- SYCLEI(cycle?) – ID(I) – SHALL – HIYA(greet) – IT – FOLLOW – THOSE – TRICKY – DYNODE(die note?) – TYTS(bits?) – SELCOT(closet?) – LATO -KIS(kiss?) – BTL
