I live in England, practically in the middle of the country, and many thousands of miles from where these events took place, so I figure I am safe from the guy

I discovered this case via the unsolved mysteries sub on Reddit, as there is a link to related subs in the sidebar and it lists the /r/zodiackiller sub (as well as LISK and EARONS.) So I read around the sub a bit, and watched a couple of documentaries on youtube, including "This is the Zodiac Speaking" which was excellent as it had the interviews with the detectives, and am starting to peer into the rabbit-hole which is this case.

I think one of the things that makes this interesting to me is the fact that he wrote letters to the papers, detailing his crimes, as well as the brazen and arrogant way he called LE from payphones near to the police stations. Someone on Reddit called it a PR campaign, and it does sorta feel a bit like that. Also the fact that he changed things around a little, using a gun, knife, wearing a hood and so on. And he wrote coded messages, which is so strange. I actually watched the David Oranchak video about the Z320 cipher, which was very interesting, although I know nothing about solving codes and ciphers. I did by the code book by Simon Singh to learn a little about codes through the ages (the book is absolutely amazing, so well written and interesting, Singh is not only clever but a great writer too.)

So I am clearly just getting started and look forwards to reading about things on here. Off to post some n00b questions now….
