Hi everybody,

I’m a new member to this site, just wanted to introduce myself. I’m a physician from Pennsylvania who has always been interested in true crime and especially fascinated with the Zodiac case. It’s nice to have a place to discuss the case with like-minded people. If I try to discuss the case with family and friends they look at me like I’m crazy. Go figure.

I’ve always been interested in cryptography. I like the challenge of solving puzzles–I enjoy doing anagrams and word puzzles. I’d like to learn about cryptography in more detail but don’t have the time to read enough to have a deeper understanding of it with a family and a busy practice.

I suppose I’m interested in the case for several reasons. Simply put, it’s an incredibly fascinating with so many unanswered questions.
It’s a sad case because justice hasn’t been brought to the families of young people who lost their lives. It’s a frustrating case because I don’t like to think this person was smarter than some really bright and good, honest investigators, as well as lay people, who have worked hard to capture this individual. I also think it’s interesting to understand the psychology of someone like the Zodiac and try to understand their thinking and what motivates their behaviors.

I tend to trust those professionally trained in criminology.

That being said, with respect to possible suspects, I believe the Zodiac is an unknown person to law enforcement, probably nondescript in every way except for his killing.

If I do have a favorite suspect, it is Bob Tarbox’s suspect. The reason I believe this is because this person fits what little Ive heard from professionals trained in criminal psychology and geographic profiling, such as Kim Rosmo. Tarbox said the person that visited him claiming to be Zodiac was a Merchant Mariner who seemed to genuinely want to stop killing and make amends for his crimes. Geographic profiling suggests that the Zodiac either lived or worked in Vallejo or Mare Island, which would fit a Merchant Marine working there as Tarbox describes. Psychologic profiling suggests the Zodiac evolved as a person, becoming "a citizen," and seeming to want to assimilate into regular society. This fits Tarbox’s description of someone wanting to make amends. I wish we had more information about this suspect and if anyone does please post.

Glad to be a member of the forum.
Thanks for having me.

Welcome to the forum Echoes.

If you like to learn about cryptography I recommend that you start out by investigating the Zodiac 408 cipher.

HI Echoes….welcome. :)

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969
