Hello,

I am a retired Police Detective with 30 years total experience. My primary specialty was property crimes but I have been trained in Homicide Investigations and have assisted in many homicide cases, though nothing as interesting as a serial killer.

My interest in Zodiac predates my police career and like many I suspect was rekindled with the recent "Hunt for the Zodiac" show. I confess I am a sucker for these stupid shows even though they aggravate me every time. Aside from silly drama issues like refusing the provide the cracked name in the cypher code until the FBI and CIA reviewed it only then to reveal it was Richard Nixon, my primary concern about this case is trying to wrap my mind around it all. Its such a complicated hot mess with facts listed in order of emotional response rather then a clear order.

Has anyone laid out the entire case in chronological order? To include not just the killings but also the letters and other leads?

Also what happened to the witnesses who provided the famous Zodiac sketch? Has anyone shown them these possible suspect photos to see if they can ID?

Paul

Welcome Paul,

Good to have you with us.

I can provide you with links to chronological accounts of some of the newspaper articles of the time:

San Francisco: viewtopic.php?f=110&t=1193

Vallejo: viewtopic.php?f=94&t=165

L.A.: viewtopic.php?f=94&t=134

As far as the FBI and the 340 Cipher…no comment from them makes me think they don’t consider it cracked. Just my take…

…they may be dealing with one or more ersatz Zodiacs–other psychotics eager to get into the act, or perhaps even other murderers eager to lay their crimes at the real Zodiac’s doorstep. L.A. Times, 1969

Welcome.

As a police officer (ret.), I was wondering if you could take a look at my theory for the blue rock springs shooting. (Though if you do decide to look at my theory Please keep an open mind and review the entire thread)
viewtopic.php?f=47&t=3570

I decided that the letters and ciphers might actually be doing more to muddle the case than help solve it, so I decided to look at each case individually and only based on the evidence from the crime scenes, police reports, and witness testimony. When I got to the blue rock springs shooting I was thinking about "access and opportunity" when it came to the crime scene, who do we know, for sure, had access to the crime scene and the opportunity to commit the crime, and what I found was unsettling. So then I moved on to my third point of investigation, motive, which it turns out my person of interest also had. Also, In most cases the victims know the killer, so I looked into this as well, and again, my person of interest likely did know Darlene ferrin.

I know this individual is a person that most would never consider looking into, and for good reason, and I want you to know I have nothing but respect for law enforcement, but in this case I can not eliminate this person of interest, even though I would really like to.

I don’t think the letters ,ciphers, or cards give any useful information as far as solving the case. I think they were written by at least 2 different people. I’m not a big fan of handwriting analysis. I know people who can recognize co-workers or family members writing, but if the first sample was written with an altered style your comparing wrong style to whatever else you get.

I thought I heard Kane was brain damaged from a car accident, or Sullivan was schizophrenic if this is the case, the ciphers may have a clear meaning to them but are just crap. If they found that Kane and Sullivan knew each other that would be crazy. I work with people who are brain damaged or mentally ill.

Pauld1951,
In a personal off the site chat with a fellow member he told me per an alumni bulletin from school that Lindsey Robbins died in 2015.We both knew him from separate schools here in S.F.

Pauld1951,

I realized after posting name that I wasn’t clear that he was one of the witnesses to Washington Cherry. Just wanted to follow up as you may not of known who I was mentioning.

Anyone that thinks like that is not of sound thought. I’m sorry but its true. The letters, ciphers and cards are the Zodiac’s creation. It’s his thoughts, his mindset, and his plans. EVERYTHING about the material is him and it can do nothing but help to catch him. One cannot write so much and NOT give something about himself away.

The book Zodiac, by Robert Graysmith is a good start. It is an easy read and, although some of his premises were later found to be incorrect, a very good introduction to the case.

I learned a lot about the case at this very well designed site: http://www.zodiackiller.com/

I also have taken a look at this site, which works very hard to separate fact from fiction: http://zodiackillerfacts.com/news-and-u … iac-files/

Here is a really good site for the ciphers: http://www.zodiackillerciphers.com/

I like this site a lot because it is very interactive between the members. The owner of the site, owners of other sites, people who know a lot about the case, and beginners all discuss the case with each other. Everybody talks to everybody, and you can meet everyone very easily here.

Thank for joining. This is definitely the most interesting mystery ever I think!
