Genetic Genealogy for Another Arrest
May 21, 2018
Genetic genealogy has led to an arrest in another cold case, the New York Times reports. A similar approach was used in the Golden State Killer case.
Jay Cook and Tanya Van Cuylenborg, a young Canadian couple, were killed while on vacation in Washington State in 1987, the Times adds. They had driven from British Columbia to near Seattle for what was supposed to be a short trip, but after buying a ferry ticket, they were never heard from again, according to the Times and Buzzfeed News. A few days later, their bodies and van were uncovered in different locations.
Police have now arrested William Earl Talbott II for Van Cuylenborg’s rape and murder and Cook’s murder. The arrest, Buzzfeed News reports, comes after police there worked with Parabon Nanolabs, which recently announced it had used a genetic genealogy approach to uncover suspects in about 20 of the 100 cases for which it had uploaded genetic profiles to the genealogy website GEDmatch.
For this case, Buzzfeed News reports that a close match was found between the crime scene samples and a second cousin of Talbott’s. After homing in on Talbott through a family tree, police in Washington State watched him for a few days and collected a cup he discarded for DNA testing, which confirmed the match, the Times says.
The Times adds that Talbott has entered a not guilty plea.

Ah! So this is on tracks! But something tells me this is going to end in a disappointing manner.
Well, we could be lucky with that one…science busts sometimes..guess if Z is still alive, he might worry about that new technology
It’d be another sensationless arrest of a dumb, ignorant person.

Again, A Genetic Genealogy Arrest
Jun 27, 2018
Genetic genealogy has led to a third arrest in a cold case, Buzzfeed News reports. Law enforcement officials in Washington State have arrested Gary Hartman in the 1986 rape and murder of 12-year-old Michella Welch, it adds.
According to Inside Edition, Michella and her sisters had been playing in a local park when she returned home to make sandwiches, and law enforcement officials suspect she returned to the park while her sisters used a restroom at a local business, as the food and her bike were found there. Michella’s body was later discovered nearby.
Investigators hired a genetic genealogist from Parabon NanoLabs to piece together the alleged killer’s family tree using DNA evidence collected at the scene, public genealogy databases, census data, and more to home in on Hartman and his brother as potential suspects, Buzzfeed News adds. Police then obtained a napkin Hartman used at a diner to confirm the match, it says. USA Today adds that Hartman was arrested during a traffic stop.
"I never believed this day would happen," Michella Welch’s mother, Barbara, tells USA Today.
A similar approach was used in the Golden State Killer case as well as in another murder case from Washington State.

Any news on the Bates DNA sampling?
Dag, They are solving cold cases right and left.
Except apparently in Riverside and Vallejo.
Asked the Riverside PD if they checked the smudge under the watch found at CJB crime scene for DNA. So far, no response.

I would think that old well worn leather band should be a treasure trove of DNA. the owner must have sweated many many times
on that watch band so it should be soaked through and through with DNA.
I emailed a letter to the Riverside Post Enterprise re Bates DNA sampling that might be possessed by Riverside PD."Do they have it, and did they send it for analysis? And, if not, why not?" That kind of thing. Maybe if others email the Press-Enterprise it might light a fire under RPD’s ass. The Press-Enterprise email address is: letters@pe.com.
