I am currently immersed in the very deep pool of potential Israel Keyes victims. In one article he admits that, in Spring 2011, he started stalking the nature trails near Anchorage (Alaska) in the hunt for victims. At one point he was hiding in the woods and aiming a silenced rifle at a couple in a deserted car park. A police officer showed up (probably checking the young couple for drugs etc) and Keyes explains he was still tempted to shoot, but changed his mind with the appearance of a second officer.
Keyes has not traditionally been linked to Z-like killings but this could suggest that it’s worth a look. He liked to change his victim profile and MO so nothing is off the cards. If anyone has any cases after June 2001 that are unsolved please post them here. He has been known to be active across the the northern US, in particular Anchorage(Alaska), Washington State, Vermont, New York State, New Hampshire and Maine.
A case that immediately sprung to mind for me was David Metzler and Heidi Childs, August 2009 in Virginia. A bit further south from his usual haunts but he specialised in long distance travel to hide his tracks.

I have come across one case that might fit Keyes’ MO but isn’t a lovers’ lane murder. In 2011 he murdered Bill and Lorraine Currier by randomly picking their house after driving a 260 mile detour on his way to Maine. He cut the phone line and invaded their home late at night, tying them up before moving them to a second, abandoned house where they met a horrible end.
Albert and Joan Musalo die in March 2006 in Montreux,Nevada. The phone line to their house had been cut and police believe they were also surprised in their beds before being shot to death.
a detailed timeline of Keyes’ whereabouts has been published by the FBI and he is unaccounted for on March 28th 2006. It is known he visited Sacramento and Las vegas, and has been known to travel 1,000 miles by car so could be in reach of this property. What makes it stand out for me is that police are stumped because it seemed like a totally random attack with no other similar crimes in that area going back decades.

Cutting the phone line is a preparatory action of the crime, thus a decision made by the attacker before tying up / killing his victims. Therefore it indeed is some characteristics of the killer’s behaviour at the crime scene (circumstantial evidence). Are there more similarities?
The crime scenes always look different but the decisions made could be the same – or not (e.g. transporting his victims)

In the instance of the Curriers’ attack it seems that Keyes only took them to a second property because he’d noted earlier in the day that it was abandoned. He must have made the decision that it was safer to carry out the worst part of his attack there for some reason (less neighbours, I’m guessing). However, the whole act of herding two adults outside and into a car, then driving them to another house… it all seems incredibly risky, I can’t believe he had the gaul. Although his abduction of Samantha Koening was no less audacious so it’s in keeping with his style.
Looking at google maps today, the Musalo’s road is a main artery through a sparse town so there was no need to move location. But there’s also no more info to go on at this stage.
This is the problem we have with this kind of thing – with no known timeline link between Keyes and the area in question, the trail simply goes dead. I am thinking that a more focused approach is needed, taking his known whereabouts and find crimes in those areas/dates rather than what I’ve done here. I will start again and work from that end of the evidence from now on.
