Now Günther Stoll…

"A word that doesn’t exist in any language, noted down in capital letters: YOGTZE. On the evening of his death, 26th of October 1984, Günther Stoll, 34, writes YOGTZE on a piece of paper, enters his light blue VW Golf and disappears into the night. He is frightened to death. "They are following me", he tells to his wife who won’t see him alive ever again. Then he starts to drive aimlessly through the Siegerland area at night, in a bar he drops unconsciously from a chair, later shows up at a female neighbor of his parents. "This night something will happen. Something horrible" he shouts to her. She sends him away. Hours later, his Golf is found in Hagen at the highway, Günther Stoll nude inside the wrecked car. His clothes are missing, he is badly injured: Someone had been driving over him with the (!) car. He dies in the same night. The death of Günther Stoll – he was a jobless food chemist by profession, never has been previously convicted before, lived completely unconspicously so far – belongs to the most misterious homicide cases of the German history: "Aktenzeichen XY" (famous TV show about crimes etc..cleared up many cases by live call center answering to witnesses) reports, the Hagen criminal investigators follows up to 1,200 leads, none leading to anything. Until today, hobby criminologists contact investigators and try to decode the word YOGTZE. "The file is brought forward every year" says the state prosecutor. At least, Günther Stoll must have meant something with ‘YOGTZE’. Up to date unreleased pictures of the crime scene: This is how the police had found the Golf in the embankment of the A45. Before Günther Stoll dies, he talks about three (!) passengers. There are not witnesses of the accident, all investigations end up with nothing."

– Stoll was on the passenger seat, already nude
– He was driven over by a car and, at that point, was already nude
– Stoll had already lost his arm
– The man with the bright jacked appeared to be injured, too
– Before making the note, Stoll appeared to ‘finally understand’
– His paranoia had started earlier (fear of ‘them’)
– The light blue VW was Stoll’s and undamaged when he parked in front of the pub
– A the pub, he suddenly went unconcious and fell down the chair, injured himself in his face
– This happened while the bartender still prepared his pilsner beer
– He fell down apparently without any reason, stood up and appeared to be irritated
– Two men helped him up and joked that he had drunken too much. Stoll responded: "Not at all, I just wanted to have my first beer..suddenly I faded away, just for a moment"
– He did not finish his beer, however the bartender took care of his facial wound and gave him a schnaps before Stoll left.
– Then two hours nobody knows where he had been..at 1 am on the 26th, he rang the bell and awoke the female neighbor. Wanted to talk to her as something horrible would happen this night. She thought he might have been drunk.
– When found he was almost dead, being concious for a few more minutes only
– The man with the bright jacket had a dirty right arm, possibly blood coming throught the jacket
– The second trucker saw that man, too. However this man disappeared. Stoll was found with his arm almost lost, talking something about four men, while ambulance was on its way. This trucker had taken a sheet from the trunk to cover Stoll with a gray wild leather jacket and some corduroy pants (explains both, the open trunk and the open passenger door).
– Both truck drivers listened to him when he said that four men were inside the Golf, not being friends. They had left him alone, he said. He then tried to put his feet outside the car, mentioning that he also wants to get away, then faded out.
– All that happened about 60 miles (100km) away from Anzhausen, the area Stoll had been before.
– He had been overrun by another car, then put nude into the Golf (his car plate was SI – CM 521)
– The accident was therefore most likely faked.
– Hours earlier, police had found out, a hithchiker was seen near Hagen highway exit
– Both men never identified
– Stoll was multiple times in the Netherlands, had met people connected to drug issues (Amsterdam IS famous for that one..)
– Police still doesn’t know where Stoll had been overrun, nor have his clothes been found

Thanks QT, I appreciate you taking the time to do that, there’s plenty of new info there for those of us who can’t speak German.
Such a strange case – I’ve been mulling it over and the most likely scenarios are that he ended up using his scientific skills in espionage or drugs and things didn’t go too well. What I can’t fathom are the reasons behind the method of killing, it’s almost too crazy to believe.
I will certainly pay more attention in future if I hear someone say they think they are being followed. That actually happened to my wife a couple of years ago (the following, not the murder) and considering my online hobbies I insisted she told me every little detail she could remember every time it happened. In the end we chalked it up to a crazy neighbour hiring a private investigator (long story) but never did get to the bottom of it. If my wife ever writes down any ciphers I’ll make sure she doesn’t leave the house until I have the key

Think the case, on first sight, appears to be most mysterious. When reviewing, however, most of the mystery comes from Gunther Stoll himself:

– Stoll writing the YOGTZE note, his behaviour of ‘enlightment’
– Stoll falling off some bar stool although not being drunk
– Stoll awakening and talking to the female neighbor at night
– Stoll being nude, injured

I thought it’d be weird if all those mysteries would have been the result of external influence. IMO, most likely the following was what had happened:

1. Stoll went paranoid, possibly on drugs (not necessarily since a longer time). Eventually he was a dealer importing drugs from the Netherlands.
2. Making a note while on speed or something, he suddenly felt enlighted. Instead celebrating or staying with his wife, or doing further notes, he uncalmly leaves the house.
3. Fresh air does the rest..he walks into a bar, drops from the bar stool from his bad trip. Irritated and orientationless he talks to the two men who had helped him up.
4. Driving is fun, so he decides to drive ‘home’..scared to meet his parents he annoys their neighbor, gets rejected.
5. Feeling hot and hotter, possibly after adding some more drugs, Stoll stops his car and gets off his clothes (or did not). He walks waving onto the highway.
6. A car hits his arm, maybe goes as a hit and run. Stoll is lying on the highway. Possibly another car rolling over him.
7. The passengers, four men, get horribly scared. They see what had happened to Stoll and panick completely. If not nude yet, they put away the clothes to help Stoll.
8. Seeing what had happened, they put Stoll into his car and drive away, possibly towards a hospital. Still panicking, they crash either accidentially or by purpose, leading to the accident.
9. Realizing the truck driver to be coming, they flee and let not only Stoll but also the truck driver with the situation alone.

Just an idea, but the main point is that Stoll had already some problems inside the bar, not only later on the highway.
