This is one of those haunting unsolved crimes that keep me awake at night. I drive very near the murder location on my way to work every day and it often gets me thinking. The recent stabbings in Colchester brought this right back to the forefront of my mind – So many possible leads and dead ends, hopefully something will turn up eventually:

I agree that Napper is a good suspect but I think there are more questions about the case that draw us away, rather than towards him. It’s hard to find much online other than what’s in the (often tabloid) media coverage, but from what we do know it’s a real toss-up whether or not this was a frenzied attack because the perp was a spurned lover, or a random psychopath.
The final hour of her life would suggest that perhaps an opportunistic killer saw a opportunity to jump into her car at some traffic lights and force her to the eventual crime scene, a fairly deserted car park. The only issue with this scenario not leading to Napper is that there are multiple witnesses describing a bearded man – whilst obviously easy for a man to alter, I don’t think Napper was ever seen with a beard.
The intrigue with this case, and the main reason Napper may not be the guilty party, is the behaviour of the victim in the days preceding the murder. Apparently a keen and meticulous record-keeper, she withdrew around £8k in cash without informing her partner (which has never been found), and told builders at her house she was leaving for an appointment that was not in her diary on the morning she died. Both these facts point to something going on in her private life that may have led to these events unfolding.

The current situation is that Napper has been interviewed and denied involvement. The police have also investigated her business and personal background in the hope of a lead but with no results.

Personally, I have one niggling issue with the evidence we know about, and that is the cash. We are told that she took the money out of her joint family bank account without telling anyone, and the money was never recovered. So if she wanted the money to stay a secret, why take it from a joint account? We only have the husband’s word on the facts surrounding the secrecy of the money, so is there something he is holding back?
