Watched Crossfire Hurricane on Showtime or HBO tonight and the free concert at Altamont SF area was interesting to watch
The Hells Angels were hired to "guard" the concert and provide security and paid in beer valued at $500 – believe the concert was in 1969 or around then
Crowd was tripped out on LSD, weed, and amphetamines…the danger was palpable watching this show as Mick and the RS were very scared on stage…belive Mick got punched by a concertgoer as he got off the helicopter as band arrived at the speedway where 300K attended
I know this has nothing to do w Z but that it was in SF area around the same time and rememer reading about it on one of the boards in the past/
Strange times and a very surreal concert to view on the documentary about the RS
I saw Crossfire Hurricane when it was first shown last Fall. It was great! An excellent retrospective on the Stones. Fifty years and still rockin’ their butts off!!!
The Altamont concert was Dec. 6, 1969 and Melvin Belli was involved with the concert being put on at Altamont. Originally the concert was to be held at Sears Point in Sonoma County but the deal fell through and Belli arranged for the Altamont Raceway as the venue. Belli is the reason why the concert has made it into the Zodiac forums.
Here’s a "reprint" of an Esquire article done back in the day.

Well, I think Belli had a role in the case when it came to court, so it’s not ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with Z.
You Tube clip from Gimme Shelter of Melvin Belli in his SF office organising the Altamount concert with the Rolling Stones. Belli was at the Altamont concert, flew into the Livermoore airport borrowed a car there and drove to Altamount. When Belli left the concert he was given a helicopter ride and left the car at altamont. The owner of the car said Belli never had permission to use the car. Belli’s lawyer license was temporarily suspended until the matter could be resolved and Belli went on vacation and that’s when Belli got the Z phone call and a birthday card from Z.

Good Post, jay st!
Belli was an interesting guy for sure. Listen to his voice, it’s so different. How would everyone describe his voice, out of just curiosity! Loved the video! Saw Belli once in person at a resturant in SF. He sure had a presence about him!

Melvin Belli on the Jim Dunbar TV show talking with "Sam"
Hey Zam,
In review of my post, I would not say it was strange times….more or less, interesting times..so many political and social issues seeming to clash around that time
Thanks all for the links and info….love the Stones, still putting on great shows and good music
If you watch Gimme Shelter Mick Jagger looks frightened to death but Keith, to his credit, does question the Hells Angels behaviour from the stage. One of the Jefferson Airplane had already been punched out by the Angels before The Stones played so they must have known the potential for violence,I guess there was nobody to kick them out!
Charlie Watts and Mick jagger at KSAN radio station listen to sonny Barger talk on the phone about Altamont
Rolling Stones "Stray Cat Blues"
I happen see that this has not been noticed on here.
Time wise it was very bad timing.
28 years before Japan was getting there aircraft carriers and midget submarines into there final launching spot’s to bring US into WW2.
Altamont has went down in history as what NOT to do in any concert’s or gathering’s of a large group of people.
I guess you could say This was the Pearl Harbor of free concerts and been known and called as the death nail that killed the innocent 1960’s.
Next on stage waiting eagerly for the nationwide limelight was Charlie Manson and family with there wild performance.
And now without more delay please welcome CHARLIE & The Family from Spahn Ranch, California!!! I don’t think we have to worry about Charlie ever being released upon the free population again.
I was fortunate enough to attend the Rolling Stones’ farewell concert in high school at the former JFK stadium in Philadelphia. The very last tour they would ever embark on! That was 33 years ago. Farewell concert my ass…
That’s an awesome poster, Seagull. I like the subtle, polite reminder to "PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN WEED".
