Another incident that I had not heard of until this week, as a parent of young children myself this one was particularly hard to read about. There’s a 6 part documentary on youtube, it has it’s cheesy moments but I’ve seen a LOT of crime documentaries and rarely has one captured the humanity and feeling of the situation so well. Part one here, the other 5 parts are easy to find once you know the title format

There’s a particularly poignant moment when one of the first response police officers breaks down as he describes examining the crime scene (around 23 minutes in), it makes me wonder how these people stay sane doing that job for an entire working life.
There’s also another, intriguing layer to this story involving the local Native American culture and a bungled trial. A very tragic story all in all.

Fast-forward nearly 10 years from my last post and we have a new announcement from the police that rings hollow in my opinion:

I am very, very happy that they have enough confidence in the latest round of testing that seems to confirm that Hart was (one of?) the perpetrator(s). However, their statements lack the certainty I had hoped for and feels more like a PR exercise that now allows them to close the case with minimal fuss. There are still unanswered questions that point to multiple attackers, some of which are:
– multiple bludgeoning weapons used, seemingly by both left- and right-handed people
– unidentified female DNA
– shoe print in the bloody tent smaller than Hart’s
– Reports of vehicular traffic on the road near the campsite very late at night that neighbouring farmers reported as suspicious
Over the years various theories have been posited for the above and could still be Hart working alone, but the cloud of uncertainty remains.
There are quite a lot of questions we will never see resolved due to the passage of time; if this is just a tactic to get the file put away for good then I hope at least it has given the surviving families a little bit of peace.
