Been researching this Phillip Earl Scheib guy, and I have to wonder if he lived in the bay area at all during the late 60’s. His father was pretty big in the horse racing world from what I understand. I wonder if there is a connection to Kjell Qvale in there somewhere.

I think I remember something about him living in the SF bay area back then…Phil’s father was big on painting cars, horses, but he made his real money on real-estate…set Phil up in "Quality Auto Painting" on Division St., in Spokane, WA…I leased space from him and opened a computer store in the same building…’Quality’ is still there but I have no idea whether Phillip Earl Scheib is still alive or not, he was when Lisa Wogan was researching Mower, it surprised him to learn from her that Mower was living in Spokne…and we haven’t even gotten into Richard Gent Butler yet! KDG, Esq.

I don’t know a whole lot about Butler other than the few things I have read online, and I read that you ran against him for some office in Idaho??? I am going to try to find out more about Earl Scheib’s real estate business. If he had a real estate attorney with the initials of R.A. then that will really get me excited, but that is probably a long shot.

Phil is still alive from what I can tell and I think he lives in Spokane Valley. I haven’t found anything on him in the bay area yet, but then again I haven’t even found any records of him living anywhere other than Washington. I wonder how his father felt about his son being in trouble a lot and being involved in the Minutemen and John Birch Society.

Butler beat Mower out for taking over when Wesley Swift died…Butler was responsible for the so called ‘Christian Defense League’ coming into existence…caused me no end of trouble by printing stuff that they just made up, and he started the ‘Defense Committee for Keith Gilbert’ claiming that the FBI had questioned me for 16 days or something like that…the FBI never questioned me, they tried but when I wouldn’t talk or respond to them that was the end of it. I have no quarrel with the FBI…a ‘Special Agent of the FBI’ came to the rescue of my mother when I was 2 years old and she went to New York City to work during WW-2 to send money back to Arkansas to support her parents and me. I never ran against Butler for anything, what I did do was everything I could to undermine him in Idaho. He would ‘proclaim’ something and I either made a liar out of him or otherwise embarrassed him…the famous ‘Official Running N!gger Target’ was printed on his press and glued up all over the county in a way that pointed right back at his office. Butler said that none of his followers could run for public office…I ran for thee different offices in Kootenai County…the last time for Sheriff and got 23 1/3% of the vote in the primary running as a Democrat…kind of pissed the local DNC off. There’s more but it’s late.

Eventually he tried to get me killed by the ‘Silent Brotherhood’ and after Robert Mathews left a Browning Hi-Power pistol in an armored car that they robbed near Ukiah, CA, it was all over…the pistol was actually registered to Matthews. Wayne Mannis, FBI, contacted me when they were arresting everyone and advised me that they had found a hit list in the possession of Gary Yarborough with five names on it and mine was one, another was Larry Broadbent, Undersheriff Kootenai County, Allen Berg/killed, a Coeur d’Alene preacher and the guy that started the Southern Poverty Law Center…can’t think of his name at the moment. This was some of Butler’s doing but they couldn’t prove it. Butler was a rat and if you ‘crossed’ him he would try to do serious harm to you…through someone else…he was also responsible for me getting arrested in Idaho…to stop me from making a mockery of him and publicly exposing him by creating a ‘parallel organization and giving all the speeches, etc., that he wouldn’t…while wearing a mock up of his AN uniform. It was fun, dangerous fun. KDG, Esq.

I thought it was Butler you ran against for mayor of Sheriff or something, but it could have been someone else you ran against. I think you mentioned it on that podcast interview that you did recently. Pretty sure I saw the ”Defense Committee for Keith Gilbert” flyer online before. I will see if I can find it again, pretty sure it is in the Minutemen thread on this site….. That is some crazy stuff, man. The name Larry Broadbent sounds very familiar to me. Or the last name at least. Butler sure sounds like the same kind of person as Mower to me.

EDIT: This was posted on my site….

Richard Gent Butler was an old nazi and close friend/supporter of Dr. Wesley Swift…a cunning and devious old man…also dead. He got sued and lost his ‘church’ property over a member taking a pot shot at a stranger passing by. Larry Broadbent made a career out of trying to bring Butler down.

Phillip Earl Scheib was a very secretive person, I have never been to his home no matter where it was; he married a girl named Sandy and they divorced for unknown reasons, Phil raised their two sons, didn’t let them get too close to the radicals…last time I saw them was about 1983/84. Phil’s father wasn’t happy about it but loved and supported his son. Phil is pretty well read, knows his history of all the MM activities…and was very close to Ranuzzi, working for him at the "Poor Richard’s Book Store" which was in the back of the Ranuzzi insurance sales office. A lot of John Birch and MM types wold go there to buy books and Phil made sure that the Guerrilla Warefare section was well stocked, including cryptograph manuals, and US TM manuals for military equipment. Phil’s stepmother was Jewish, he and his dad were not…I’m Jewish, a fact that drove Butler crazy…and there are some funny stories there.

When JFK was shot the JBS and MM immediately started distributing the cheaply made bumper stickers that said "A Commie Killed Kennedy" in two lines; this might have been a Phil Scheib creation; certainly one of the most effective bits of ‘black propaganda’ in US political history…I doubt that the FBI bought it but it certainly made for less work for them…and they still got paid. Do you think Scheib would have info on the disappearance of Luray and Carey? I might try to get in touch with him. I’m especially interested in the manuals you mentioned, particularly any that involve cryptography. Do you know much about codes that the Minutemen used? I would love to see some or get more info on them. Was Scheib close with Mower?

I do remember reading about the flyers and stickers that the MM distributed after JFK. I also don’t believe the FBI bought it, but the American public probably did. I also read that there were quite a few FBI and CIA agents that that infiltrated the MM and some were even regional coordinators. I wonder if we should move the MM discussion to the Minutemen thread in the suspects section? Kinda getting this thread off topic.

I found a photo of Houghton at age 9 that I posted in the Minutemen thread that people might get a kick out of.

Scheib knows…it is doubtful that you will get him to talk to you about any of it…maybe let him know that Mower is dead (if he doesn’t already. The FBI may have infiltrated…not hard to do…there never were many MM anyway. Scheib knows that there is no statute of limitations on murder or complicity in a murder. He knew Carey and the rest of the folks at Swift’s Church meetings and meetings in his home in Lancaster, CA. I think that the best you might be able to get out of Scheib is a ‘no’ and an opportunity to ask him to see that any journals he has kept are somehow preserved for posterity. Scheib is not a ‘tough guy’ but he is devious and clever.

Houghton was not the sort of ‘personality’ that could just disappear…going underground is really hard work, you don’t have a moment when you can be careless or let your hand down…the queers just don’t live that way.

I’m off to the NEX to do some shopping, be back in about six hours.

I will just ask Scheib about the manuals. Maybe he still has copies he’d be willing to part with. I won’t mention Luray or Carey. That is if I can even get in touch with him.

For the record, I do not believe Houghton went underground. I did think so for a while but after talking to you and then Robert Taylor also saying so, I think he was killed in 1967. It makes perfect sense.

All my life I’ve been an avid news junkie, reading the daily paper every morning and first listening to the news on the radio, later watching the TV news shows…and it all started back when all we had was an old Philco battery powered radio on the farm; Old ‘Gabriel Heater’ with his declaration: "I’ve got good news tonight" was the signal that the day was over. I learned about Houghton’s shot up car being found and that he had disappeared on the news paper…later someone sent me clippings, pretty much what has been posted on this site. Missouri is full of old homesteads with old wells, hand dug affairs and if I were looking for Houghton I’d start with a look at old maps; the same with Carey & Luray, back in the 1960’s there were a lot of irrigation wells, they may still be there, that are often several hundred feet deep with pumps to bring the water up, more pumps to spread it on the alfalfa fields…drop a couple of bodies down one of these holes followed by a stick of dynamite or hand grenade…to collapse it in…not likely that they would ever be found unless someone knows where to look. It would have to be someone who had helped the fugitives and feared that they would ‘tell on them’ for helping their evading the law.

Why would I bring this up, well I’ve listened in on discussions by people who fancied themselves to be patriotic subversives discussing the tactics and strategies of terror…political terror…and this was back in the 1960’s. If something like this happened to Carey & Luray and I suspect that it did, there will be no volunteers coming forth to claim the deed, perhaps a deathbed statement or journal/diary somewhere but such things were also discouraged.

Dennis Patrick Mower was no ‘pistolero’ or gun aficionado, read that collector, but he possessed weapons from time to time. When I first met him he showed me a large "Dirty Harry" type revolver, nickel plated .357 or .44 magnum, I forget, and he had access to Carey’s guns…I know because I bought some of Carey’s parts, including a water cooled .50 caliber machine-gun made by Colt #455, but that’s immaterial, when I fled to Canada, the person keeping my guns distributed them to team members…Mower got the 9mm P-38 with the Maximum silencer and in a post conviction/punishment conversation he said that he didn’t think much of the silencer and didn’t think it worked…he wouldn’t have said this unless he had been out shooting it; not a smart thing to do considering the risk if caught with a ‘silenced’ weapon…and the bullet holes in Houghton’s car look like 9 mm in the photographs.

Were he alive Carey would have made a perfect suspect for Z because of his temperament, high strung, etc., KDG, Esq.

I remember reading something about a Minutemen member who was also an FBI informant, and he took agents to where Houghton was supposedly buried and nothing turned up. You’re right, it would have made more sense to drop him down a well and cave it in. Nobody would ever find his body that way.

Thinking back on this issue, as I recall it was Dennis Patrick Mower that did this…probably as a ploy to ‘clear’ himself of the accusation. KDG, Esq.

I don’t think it was Mower, but I could be mistaken. I will see if I can find out who it was…
