On another site, I read that the after shooting Stine, Z had to get out, go to drivers side of car and gain control of vehicle because it was rolling forward.
If true the kids did not hear a shot possibly because it was further down the street.
He had to turn off engine by taking keys. Do we know if car was automatic or standard?
Then Zodiac had gotten blood on his hands requiring him to try wipe for fingerprints.
Taking the wallet, known to purport motive as robbery only as a deflection.
Did he not anticipate the movement of car? Mistake 1
Grabbed wheel with gloves contaminating with blood making them slippery? Mistake 2
Left fingerprints requiring a wipedown? Mistake 3
Decided to get part of shirt…???
Took precious time which nearly got him caught? Mistake 4
Off the mark ?
For your health: Take iodine and Vitamin D (which isn’t a vitamin) and cut out most simple and complex carbohydrate and move to a Keto diet. Do it over time. You’ll thank me later.

That is merely someone’s opinion of what might have happened and nothing showing that it did.
Sure. But it makes sense to me. He botched the job and was making it up on the fly.
It does explain the nonsensical need to:
1. Wipe down vehicle. Why would his fingerprints be on dash anyway???
2. Take keys. Why would he go to drivers side and get in anyway???
3. Remove gloves.
4. No shot was heard by kids.
5. Be on the drivers side of vehicle.
If I was the Zodiac, I would have asked Stine to wait for me while I go inside so he would put in park.
When he looked to do so, I would have shot him. Got out and walked away from the back seat on right side of car.
I would get attention of press by putting the MO on a postcard. "By Gun." Nothing else. And continued indefinitely.
Thankfully, I am not that kind of person.
