It’s interesting how Gaikowski’s self-description in a Feb., 1970 GT article contrasts with Cat Yronwode’s memories of what he looked like. Richard started working at Good Times in April, 1969, and Garson left the paper on June 4, 1969. The fort mentioned is Fort Ord in Monterey, California.

–Gaikowski never looked "hip" — i remember him with slightly long (collar length) hair, but never in full long-hair mode. I remember him clean-shaven and also with a little fuzz-mustache thing, or fuzz-face. He dressed straight, too, never in embroidered clothing, patched clothing, or with eccentric ornamentation, as we hippies did.
Our contacts all took place during the interval after he joined (when marvin garson was still there) and after marvin garson left — and terminated when i stopped selling the paper.

Last Saturday, a group of us longhairs had breakfast at the PX snack bar on the fort. The place was filled with GIs who were bugging out of Saturday inspections, a weekly spit-and-polish ritual despised by soldiers universally. Our very unmilitary dress, long hair and facial outcroppings made us the center of attention when we walked in.
I can’t say I quite get what it is you’re trying to imply here.
Gaikowski had shoulder length hair according to this person – and a mustache. Doesn’t scream Z, does it?
Gaikowski’s "hippie look" did not seem very convincing to Cat, but Richard’s (unless he was exaggerating) description of himself and his buddies sounded more like typical hippies to me — and it was enough to garner the attention of the soldiers at the PX snack bar.
Okay, I just learned today via Tom Voigt that Richard did not start growing long hair and facial hair until after 1970, so my comparison is irrelevant.

How do you know that is accurate information, though?
A few minutes ago on a toilet not very far, far away….
Tom was told that by several of Richard’s former colleagues at the Good Times paper.
Do they remember if he had a crew cut in ’69?
I’m assuming they didn’t tell Tom anything about a crewcut or we would have heard about it by now.
Bummer. I was hoping that since they remembered when he started growing long hair that they might also have remembered him having a crew cut.

Oh, definitely. Ya know, there is more info out there on Gyke than any other suspect/POI by far, yet he is still not even in my top 5.
