And if so, what kind? Z was a car-driving guy, and there are some approximate descriptions of his car or cars. Ted seemed to get along without a car for some of the years of his life.

And if so, what kind? Z was a car-driving guy, and there are some approximate descriptions of his car or cars. Ted seemed to get along without a car for some of the years of his life.

Ted owned and used cars for most of his life, until he became very isolated in his Montana cabin. Then he primarily walked, rode a bicycle, bummed rides and took the bus. But he had drivers licenses his entire life, and owned and used different cars. At different times he owned cars and at others he would borrow family cars. As a professor at Berkeley he did own vehicles. He drove to areas north of Berkeley to go hunting, and drove through Northern CA and Montana to look for land to build his cabin. In fact he had just driven through the area around Deer Lodge, Montana weeks before Zodiac told the LB couple he had just escaped from the prison in Deer Lodge, Montana.

Cars that I know he owned include a white early 1970’s Pontiac, a 1950’s American made pick up truck, a VW and a bronze – grey 4 door sedan, probably a Chevy Malibu.

Here is some material from the old board, including contributions from BENTLEY, our resident car expert, formerly known as WRENCH.

BENTLEY – that picture you have of the hood of a car, which I assume is associated with Ted, could be a late ’60s early ’70s Pontiac. As I recall it was off white or yellow. If you knew more about the EAR Pontiac it might be possible to link them up.

AK WILKS: Yes, thanks, the only info on the ONS vehicle was "a white Pontiac, probably early 1970’s model."

Frustrating that it isn’t more specific.

One interesting fact – three vehicles were associated with the EAR/ONS – a 1952 American Pick Up Truck, a VW and a white 1970’s model Pontiac.

Ted K owned or used all three of these types of vehicles.

He owned a 52 American pick up. He was seen photographed at his cabin with a white 1970’s Pontiac. And he and his brother shared use of a VW.

An a 52 pick up would have been fairly rare in the mid seventies.

This type of 50’s pick up was also associated with possible Zodiac victim Judith Hakari (one or two men seen dumping something, perhaps a body, where Hakari’s body was found, had this type of truck) and Sonoma victim Jeanette Kaemahle, last seen entering such a pick up.

Bentley (and other car buffs) –

Don’t know if this is the same car in the picture above or a different one.

Can you venture any guess about model, make or year?

Also note the white clothesline Ted is holding! Similar (or the same) as the kind used by Zodiac at LB and used by the EAR/ONS. Ever see the Hitchcock movie ROPE? The killers were intellectuals who did murder as an experiment and to prove they were smarter than everyone else, and they had a dinner party were they posed with the rope they had just used to strangle a boy.

BENTLEY – Yes, the hood looks Pontiac to me because of the raised and pointed nose, a Pontiac hallmark. Some Fords were similar however, and if it’s the same car as the other photo I may have to hedge my bet. The mirror looks Ford, here is a late ’60s Ford mirror. I know of no GM or Mopar (Dodge Plymouth Chrysler) that has this shape. If only we had a glimpse of the dashboard or steering wheel. Most US cars lost the wing windows by 1970 but some sedans and wagons, which is what this is, kept them a little longer.

Teds car, like the 4 door Malibu sedan he’s also associated with, would normally be family cars. Most single men prefer the sportier 2 door coupes. Guys that drove 4 doors and wagons usually either a) got them cheap, b) had no ego associated with cars, c) got them from their parents, d) got made fun of. Heck, maybe it was the start of his downhill decent. ;)

My apologies to you single 4 door owning men out there..

OK, so he did have a car in Berzerkley. And you "know for a fact" he went hunting in northern CA? That’s interesting if true, but not really necessary for him to be the Z. I have to disagree with those who insist that the Zodiac was an expert marksman who must have had a lot of experience with firearms. On the contrary he failed to kill two intended victims. But the Z was definitely a car driver. You really think Ted K could have been EARONS? Wasn’t he supposedly living in Montana at that time?

1. Yes Ted definitely owned vehicles during his time in California and the first part of his life in Montana.

2. David Kaczynski himself told me that he knew for sure that Ted went to the wooded areas north of SF/Berkeley for hunting. David also told me he "thought" Ted owned or had use of a very primitive small cabin in those areas. In Montana Ted hunted for sustenance. He was a very good skilled hunter. In town one day a man was lamenting that he did not have the tracking, hunting and marksmanship skills to successfully get an elk. Ted replied that he thought he could get an elk, and his neighbor vouched for Ted’s skill. Ted said he thought he could get one but did not have the money for the license. The man said he would pay for the licence on condition that if Ted got one, he would get the antlers and they would split the meat and pelt. Ted agreed and he got an elk. I agree Z does not need to be an expert shot, hunter or ex military. But he did have some interest and skill with hunting and guns, and Ted would qualify in that regard.

3. There is a thread here that explores the possibilities, similarities and key differences between Ted and VR/EAR/ONS, and Zodiac as an Unsub and EAR/ONS. Ted lived in Montana for all the Unabomber crimes, many of which took place or were mailed from CA. But I have been less interested in Ted for EAR/ONS.

Yeah, I can’t see Ted K as the EAR. The Zodiac, yes. Same MO of playing games with the press—enjoying the publicity, etc.

EAR/ONS did the same kind of games with the press. Including sending taunting letters and a poem. Look at the sketches on the first page of the thread. I’ll bump the thread. But there are mismatches as well, and lately I have not pursued the theory as aggressively as I once did.
