Recently the world wide media reported that Ted Kaczynski had reached out via Twitter to break his 20 year silence with the media. Lawrence Wright broke the story on Twitter by publishing the letter, but the real story is Bryan Denson (see article above) who received both the hoax letter and a REAL letter from Ted Kaczynski after responding to the request for an interview. Ted told him it was a fake and then promoted his new book and website. He published this article before Lawrence Write’s Tweet came out. There were reports that other reporters also received letters.
Both Bryan Denson and AKWilks (when I discussed this with him in a PM) thought the letter could have come from Ted. Both leave open the possibility that TJK had one of his friends or followers do it. AKWilks thought maybe, "Ted was upset that Dave has a book coming out all about how Ted is mentally ill. Maybe Ted wanted to talk to a journalist but wanted to be able to deny it so he had a friend mail it."
I personally think the first letter is a fake, as Ted claims, and the second letter is real. Here is why:
1. The handwriting is too sloppy
2. According to this article, Ted does not have access to a copy machine

"To save money on postage and the time it takes to hand-copy letters — since he has no access to a copy machine — he has asked many of the people who regularly correspond with him for their email addresses to share with others in his network. Sometimes Kaczynski mails one person a letter and then asks them to scan and share it with the group."
(However, in this case the letter was copied and the name written on it in the same handwriting before it would have left the prison.)
3. The addresses for the reporters were hand written on the envelope in the same handwriting. Ted would not have saved those addresses from those reporters 20 years ago. The letters went to UofM and they were published at Smoking Gun, where the person who wrote the hoax letter got the names of the reporters. Both Lawrence Wright and Bryan Denson are on this list.

Who would do this hoax?
My guess is someone who read "This Book Will Change Your Life." Check out this article, a lot of people have been writing to him.
Thanks for posting that information above. It’s very odd.
I did consider that Ted might have had one of his followers send the first letter for the reasons you correctly quoted me on above. But it doesn’t quite make sense, I admit.
You bring up a good point about the prior hoax and prank letters. That may have inspired it, as you suggest.
