One of the most famous and the finest steam locomotives built were the "Class-J" 4-8-4,
made by Norfolk and Western Railroad in their Roanoke shops. They were considered
perfect!……but for locomotives 610-613, N & W spent more money on perfecting their already perfected steam locomotives.
Fortunately, one survives today.
The Class-J 611 was restored and returned to steam and operated from 1982-1995.
She delighted thousands of train fans all over the world!
In 1995, Norfolk Southern abruptly ended their 40-year steam program. Class J-611 was
returned to display at the Virginia Museum of Transportation.
Now, the State of Virginia (and millions of railfans) want her BACK in action! Norfolk Southern has resumed their steam program, but this time, 611 will continue to operate regardless
of whether the steam program continues or not (we hope it does).
(Norfolk Southern is under the operating management of BNSF, who gave them the order to resume the steam program. BNSF has a 99-year contract to operate NS to make sure it does not go broke! The Feds denied a merger, so this contract is the same thing.

I come from a RR family. My maternal grandfather and uncle were switchmen for the Santa Fe. I still remember engines chuffing into the yards, blowing great clouds of steam! My son’s now a hogger (engineer) for Burlington Northern & Santa Fe.
