Wasn’t sure where to comment on this but I think Tahoe and Seagull deserve HUGE kudos for assembling a chronological record of SF Chronicle articles about the case.
I almost forgot about it since it’s a locked thread but this is an absolutely fantastic resource. I’m convinced that Zodiac read the Chronicle regularly for articles about himself and was compelled to write at least once and probably more in direct response to a Chronicle article. There is a thread waiting to be written on that subject and I can almost guarantee that I’ll be referring to something in the above thread in some future post.
Many thanks for the hard work!
I had the same quandary Entropy but in the end I settled for PM’ing my thanks and making mention of it in WC’s thread as it had already paid dividends.

It’s is so much easier now to cross reference the things that zodiac wrote, with possible reasons for writing them, against what appeared in the Chron regarding the case.
Just reading through the articles themselves in order is quite chilling because you can almost put yourself in the position of the press and the public at the time only knowing what little they knew then.
Yes, indeed. A congratulatory thread is most definitely warranted.
Yep, absolutely first rate – well done, them.
Well thank you! All of you.
It was great working with Seagull and putting this all together. I know she made many trips to the library and it paid off…tremendously.
It really was an exciting challenge and one I think we ALL needed to see completed. It truly does help put a perspective on things.
I was updating it so much I decided to lock it. Maybe I should unlock or copy the thread?
I heartily concur. I have not yet had the time to benefit from your efforts, but I was extremely impressed. You deserve a huge thank-you from all of us. Here comes mine now…
Thank-you!!!

Thanks for the thanks, everyone! I think the Chronicle articles especially are good to have because Zodiac wrote most of his letters to the paper. And a huge thank you to Tahoe for organizing everything and creating all those links for the images.
I’m thinking that we should keep the thread locked so that Tahoe can continue to post more articles, they will stay in order and can be easily referenced. If posts get made between the articles and /or the articles get quoted in that thread there would be duplication and confusion!
The articles can be copied and put in posts in any of the threads for discussion.

I agree and saves me typing my own reason (which was the same) lol. Thanks Deb.
This collection of articles is very good…it clears up that Charles Jarman, who was murdered shortly after a series of Z letters, actually was a victim of Brommell ( SF Chronicle 01-31-1970).
Robert Salem, btw, was killed by Stanley Dean Baker (22) and Harry Allen Stroup (20) wgi confessed to this murder, referring themselves to Satanism and the cult of the Grand Chingon as well as the 4-Pi-movement, also mentioning three other human ‘sacrifices’.

The article from Paul Avery about "The Exorcist", and the reply from our friend? Bloomin’ marvellous. Very well played you guys.
Thank you Smithy! The interaction between Zodiac, his letters, the Chronicle and Paul Avery is quite telling when looked at as a whole, in chronological order.
The article from Paul Avery about "The Exorcist", and the reply from our friend? Bloomin’ marvellous. Very well played you guys.
Agreed, smithy, on both points. It’s honestly hard to tell who is playing whom here. Avery writes about Zodiac beginning his "exclusive correspondence with the Chronicle" almost as if he is a valued guest columnist who every once in awhile writes in and predictably has his correspondence become a front-page news story.
Zodiac responds to articles written by Avery about himself like there is some kind of personal relationship and engages Avery by mailing a personal letter and involving him in the entire Zodiodrama. I honestly think Z’s efforts to involve notable San Francisco "celebrities" like Avery, Belli, possibly Herb Caen and Count Marco is a bit of a stroke of genius on his part. If you want notoriety, address or threaten the folks, particularly those in the media, who can get your message across.
I really wonder if this was calculated rather than just "getting sore at something Avery wrote about him".

I think it was (calculated) but also, as you pick up on, possibly even compulsive. In MK & Dr. VN’s "This is the Zodiac Speaking" it is suggested that Zodiac was almost being pal-y pal-y in his approach to the newspapers, like he was dressing a confident rather than just being a murderer bragging about his crimes and taunting the police. This was like human interaction to him albeit on a very twisted level. I agree with that and have felt it myself, as you guys are and have and are hypothesizing on.
The thought of dragging in celebrities is good. It’s almost like we see today when celebrities themselves feel the need to re-invent themselves so that the public remain interested.
Fer shure!
A bit like an ad campaign – an unfolding marketing strategy – escalating.
