I mention it to people as something I find interesting and explain the many aspects of it and the people I have met because of it. That’s usually before I say hello. God help them if they then show an interest lol.

If I tell people I’m interested in Z, or in some other bizarre unsolved cases, they give me a funny look.

There’s no real way to make it LESS "weird" to people, either. I always try to give it some context by saying that I was a Crim/Psych major and that I studied a lot of similar things in college. Doesn’t seem to have much effect.
I’m fortunate to have a wife who is also fairly interested in this sort of stuff (although she maintains that if anything ever happens to her, my collection of serial killer books is going to force me to do a lot of explaining).

In a mystery novel – Vivid descriptions are given of a masked intruder who enters the room where the murdered person is ultimately found. These descriptions lead the reader to assume that this masked intruder was the killer.
What the eye witness’s saw at the Stein killing was just their vivid imaginations.
The man wiping down the taxi really wasn’t the killer that
blew Paul’s brains out because they didn’t witness that part!
Besides, it was the guy waving the gun that did it!
Sorry, I can’t explain away the shirt pieces and Zodiac confessing to killing Paul in a letter!
It’s all an assumption.
Maybe if I get a new horse hair bow for my violin the zebra can
write and play a new song on how to explain away eyewitness accounts with red herrings!
