Not a dumb question! Z loves misdirection IMO so why not take an opportunity to make LE think that he lives in San Francisco. Maybe he does … maybe he doesn’t.

I’ve always thought that Z had a job. He only kills on the weekend / late at night. Makes me think that he had somewhere to be during the weekdays.

That might raise a question whether he was available on weekdays to travel to San Francisco to mail the letters.

I have always belived he had a job,a job that is relatively close to where he actually lives.But in my opinion he would be the kind of guy at work who is there but also not there if you know what I mean , someone who is simply a shadow .
