Chaucer, I agree: “9 mm Luger” out of context is ambiguous. It could refer to the pistol or to the caliber.
Is there a ballistics report available?
Zodiac was a screwup. He left behind five breathing victims, two survivors, bootprints, possibly fingerprints and palmprints, tiretracks, eyewitnesses, and earwitnesses. If the APB had gone out for a WMA he would have been locked up in ’69.
BTW, Luger is Count Zaroff’s pistol of choice.

In his correspondence with police he always stated the type of ammo used, not what type of gun was used so I think it’s possible he told Nancy Slover they were shot with 9mm Luger, meaning the ammo, as opposed to he shot them with a 9mm Luger meaning the type of gun.
Curious why the weapon, not used at LB, would then be swapped for another for Stine just a few weeks later.
Who said they were swapped. The weapon Hartnell described him having at LB sounds like what was used to shoot Paul Stine. He had not used it at LB so there was no need to get rid of it.

He didn’t always say what ammo was used. In the same letter he says the ammo type for LH (Super X) yet for BRS he just says "made by Western" in all three letters, why doesn’t he say what the actual ammo was? Odd, but not if he doesn’t actually know. Also, I am not aware of him saying what ammo was used for Stine’s murder. So that is one mention of the actual ammo type out of four attacks.

No, but obviously I meant when he spoke about the ammo.

Point being since he usually described the ammo used, not the weapon used it’s possible he was referring to the ammo and not the gun when he told Nancy Slover a 9mm Lugar.

In any case, the Zodiac only once specified the actual ammo used, which was for the LH claim. For BRS he only said "made by Western". For LB he never claimed anything at all about the attack itself, and for Stine he didn’t even mention the weapon or the ammo used.
For BRS, the phone call said "They were shot with a 9mm Luger".

Not sure what you are on about but perhaps you should re-read my OP on this…

"They were shot with a 9mm Luger" is what Nancy Slover remembered him saying, my point is maybe there was not an "a" in there and he said "They were shot with 9mm Lugar" which would be more consistent with him talking about ammo instead of the actual gun used.
