The CA DOJ has kept an open case file on the Zodiac for over 50 years.

Does anyone know the name of anyone at the DOJ who is assigned to the case?

Nobody is assigned to it. The DOJ is basically a state version of the FBI; it has no jurisdiction in the Zodiac cases, but offers state resources upon request. Such as with document examiner Sherwood Morrill.

Interesting. So the actual investigating – if it’s even occurring – would happen in the local jurisdictions.

Any idea who the investigators assigned to the case are in San Fran, Vallejo, Solano and Napa Co.?

For Vallejo PD it’s Terry Schillinger. Not sure about the others at the moment.

Dax West is the investigator in Solano County I believe.

ETA: Sgt. Pat McMahon is in charge of the investigation in Napa. I’m working on finding the name for SFPD.

ETA2: Detective Gianrico Pierucci was the one in charge for SFPD as recently as last year.

A side note is that Micki Links is the person involved in the Nancy Bennallack and Judith Hakari murders, but she is very tight lipped on these.

Yes, she is. I have reached out to her a couple of times, and have gotten complete radio silence.

I would like to know who the previous (retired) detectives who worked these jurisdictions were. Obviously, we all know the original investigators (Toschi, Narlow, etc.) I mean the ones who worked the case after them in the 80s, 90s, and 00s.

Typically, the Zodiac case is where detectives get put right before they are about to retire.

IMO this assignment is nothing more than a "golden handshake" for these about-to-be retirees. They are probably being handsomely paid, biding time that goes toward an even more handsome pension with little risk involved. Just what, if anything, was learned/discovered by all these detectives? Probably nothing and that is why everyone is so closed lipped! Seems like there should be some accounting of their activities. It would be most interesting to see just what these were? Interviews? With whom? How many? Visits to crime scenes? Etc., etc., whatever these "detectives" do!

You can’t solve a decades old cold case without DNA. As they learned with ALA, everything else is circumstantial.

Yep exactly. Poyser even said as much when he got interviewed in 2018. "It really comes down to DNA. Without it, you have nothing. It’s a 50-years-old case."

So what is the dna status? There is dna or there is not! They have had plenty of time to test for this and do geneological research if appropriate. Why can’t they at least release a general statement update?

Very unfair to all those accused and their families at this point. A general statement could be used to eliminate most, if not all, of these poi’s.

JMO but…

that standard of DNA alone would only really apply to sex crimes where the medium was semen or saliva. For example with JJD and EARONS they knew he was the rapist because it was a semen sample.

This is not the case with Zodiac. The canonical crimes are not sex crimes. They are thrill kills done in point blank or close proximity. If it was blood DNA (blood being the medium) and the suspect bled that would be compelling. However DNA from a stamp is not going to be enough. You will need plain old detective work to make sure that person lines up with all the other evidence also. In this case there is additional forensic evidence like fingerprints and ballistics. Maybe someone out there has inherited the guns of the Zodiac. Maybe the Zodiac inherited his. Heirlooms. Someone has Paul Stine’s keys and IDs. Things there that would easily thrust someone into a leading candidate for the Zodiac crimes.

True but in light of all the past hints of forthcoming news, I’d think a current statement could be made. Tom Voight was allowed to view evidence by Det. Poyser. Then we were told to "stay tuned" and that also came from Poyser but he retired. So what is the status now? With all these detectives and no news, I’m thinking they are simply being paid to sit on their derriere’s (as Ted Kazinski might say lol) and answer the telephone in the off chance someone may call with a hot tip.

Tom, on the site in your link you suggest that lack of resources could be one reason that progress is delayed. Respectfully, this shouldn’t be the case. What I mean by that is there are dozens, hundreds, maybe even thousands of us out here who would probably contribute to a GoFundMe or other fundraising activities to provide resources. They probably wouldn’t accept it, but many of those same people would be happy to provide work on the project in an official capacity. If money or labor is the limiting factor there are ways to increase both. Is there any way you can suggest that to the powers that be? I’d probably be willing to draft $100 a month for such an effort. I bet we could fund a full-time position if they would accept our efforts.
