I read that he lived a few blocks away from her when she was married to her first husband? Is this corroborated? Michael Mageau remembered Darlene Ferrin naming him as Richard. Thanks.
Marshall and Darlene/Jim never lived near each other.
However, another Richard (Gaikowski) followed Darlene and her husband, Jim, across the country to Albany, NY, and worked in the same building, for the same company, with Jim.
interesting Tom, thanks for the response.
Have you researched why he used two different names at the same address i.e. Marshall and Dickey?
Also this is very interesting.
The oil checks were in his given name, which he had changed after leaving Texas.
Thanks. Have you got any photos of Marshall in the 1960s that could corroborate the claim that he gained considerable weight to avoid detection?
There are many similarities here, stripped gear in reverse, the crew cut he had at the time of Shepard/Hartnell stabbings, matching abnormal cards etc. Marshall’s shuffling walk matched the suspect seen by Donald Foulkes re Paul Stine murder. His unusual shuffling walk was a revelation moment for me because he didn’t know he was being watched by Foulkes. Marshall lived close by with a basement. He is a prime suspect on this evidence.
“The suspect that was observed by officer Fouke was a WMA 35-45 Yrs about five-foot, ten inches, 180-200 pounds. Medium heavy build- Barrel chested- Medium complexion- Light-colored hair possibly greying in rear (May have been lighting that caused this effect.) Crew cut- wearing glasses- Dressed in dark blue waist length zipper type jacket (Navy or royal blue) Elastic cuffs and waist band zipped part way up. Brown wool pants pleated type baggy in rear (Rust brown) May have been wearing low cut shoes. Subject at no time appeared to be in a hurry walking with a shuffling lope, Slightly bent forward. The subject’s general appearance- Welsh ancestry.”
p.s. I’ve just read that you said the Zodiac sent a letter on Marshall’s 45th birthday 13 March 1971 (born Joe Don Dickey 1926 Lubbock).
This is the Zodiac speaking
Like I have allways said, I am crack proof. If the Blue Meannies are evere going to catch me, they had best get off their fat asses & do something. Because the longer they fiddle & fart around, the more slaves I will collect for my after life. I do have to give them credit for stumbling across my riverside activity, but they are only finding the easy ones, there are a hell of a lot more down there. The reason I’m writing to the Times is this, They don’t bury me on the back pages like some of the others.

Marshall lived in Riverside in the 1960s at the time of the murder of Cheri Jo Bates

Thanks Tom. I will check it out.
I’ve found the first husband James Phillips
James first met Darlene in San Francisco August 1965. Married in Reno Jan 1966. Any connection to Marshall?

Rick Marshall operated "The Port" in small Mill Valley (Marin County)
Below are three views of a film schedule for the Port theater from April 1974, which I acquired through my Zodiac case research.
El Espectro Rojo aka The Red Phantom played on the 27th and 28th of the month. Less than three months later, the Zodiac mailed a letter from Marin County in which he called himself "The Red Phantom." Zodiac had never previously used that moniker, or mailed a letter from Marin County.

Tom are you suggesting that RG had a fixation on or obsession with Darlene and/or was stalking her?

There was a relationship between Gaikowski and Crabtree and/or Darlene, IMHO.
What do you suspect the nature of this relationship was? Was this RG being creepy by following them across the country? Or was this some kind of mutual polyamorous relationship?

In July 2008, I received a phone tip (415 267-4818) from a woman who worked at a care facility in the Sacramento (Cal.) area. She told me that Marshall was a patient where she worked, and that he had spoken about the Zodiac case. She found him to be extremely suspicious and was not sure what to do.
Thanks. Can you elaborate please Tom. What did Marshall reveal? Did anybody claim that he was the Zodiac?

Apparently detectives spoke to Marshall and asked him if he wanted to confess while he still had the time, and he denied being Zodiac.
But I still think he is a better suspect than ALA.
Zodiac is not gonna talk to the blue meanies but he may have revealed it to somebody else? I think Tom posted and revealed that they never did a DNA test on Marshall which I find extraordinary being a main suspect from the early days.
