There’s been some suggestion by Tom V. and others that Zodiac was probably a smoker.

Is there any evidence or suggestion that he might have been an alcoholic? Or perhaps did drugs?

It’s rather common for psychopaths and those with personality disorders to self-medicate with alcohol or drugs.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

ETA: I want to point out that I am not suggesting substance abuse or use as an excuse for his actions or that Zodiac did what he did because he was drunk or on drugs.

Any cigarette butts retrieved from the crime scenes? Great sources of DNA. Of course a negative is he would be less likely to be alive now.

I believe cigarette butts were recovered at Lake Berryessa. I can’t confirm this, but I want to say I remember hearing this.

Yes and a beer bottle but unfortunately it can not be confirmed that these were the Zodiac’s. Also depending on your point of view, cigarette butts were found at the CJB scene.

Interesting, makes me wonder what might be going on behind the scenes with DNA.

Would A serial killer who never ever swear in his communications, be a drunk? a drug user? I don’t think so.
Would he smoke? not likely IMO, however it’s possible …

He did swear and curse in a few of his letters. Also, I don’t see how using foul language has any connection to substance abuse.

According to Kathleen Johns, her abductor did not smell of smoke, actually.

Thank you Caucher.

That is IMO as good as nothing due to 6 words, not rally bad swearing words, as many as 23 letters !

The only word there that I consider to be a curse word out of those would be damn IMO. It would almost make you think that the killer was in someway a tad religious ??? That’s just my opinion.

Edit: and “hell”. So few so called curse words is right. That’s not very vulgar at all if you ask me.
