One detail that has always confused me is this:
Mike Mageau told police that after he was shot, he witnesses the car pull out and turn left onto Columbus Parkway "in the direction of Springs Road". In fact, several people have used this phrase to describe the direction in which Zodiac fled the scene.
However, I find this phrase odd. Why use Springs Road as a reference point? Tennesse Street is actually the first major intersection along Columbus Parkway.
We know that Zodiac placed his call from Tuolumne and Springs Road. Did Mageau know this when he gave his statement? Why woud Mageau use Springs Road as a direction rather than Tennessee Street and why use a cross-street as a reference point anyways?
ETA: The first mention of this phrase comes from an interview conducted by Ed Rust in the afternoon of July 6th, 1969. The exact phrase from the police report is "continued on Blue Rock Springs Road at a very high rate of speed towards Springs Road in Vallejo".
Also, in the same interview, he states, "…about five minutes before the shooting occurred, Michael states a vehicle pulled into the lot, coming from the direction of Springs Road and Vallejo".
Again, an odd way to describe direction IMO.

Maybe Springs Road was Mageau’s preferred route.
Probably because they were planning to eat at Mr Ed’s. They travelled west on Springs Rd, then turned around and headed to Columbus Parkway via Springs Rd. Therefore, it’s likely Michael Mageau chose this as an obvious reference point. And his Beechwood residence is closer to Springs Rd.

Both of these are fair assessments, yet it still strikes me as odd that prior to Springs Road, you have Lake Herman Road, Ascot Parkway, and Tennessee Street. Just seems like an odd turn of phrase rather than simply saying "south on Columbus Parkway".
I’m not suggesting Mageau was involved in anything nefarious, but I have always found it peculiar that he would use Springs Road as his directional reference. It is even more peculiar that it was the same street that the phone call was made from. Perhaps it is just another case of zynchronocity.

Haven’t dug a lot into the victims and so I may be off here but didn’t Darlene live, at the time the crime occurred, on Virginia Street? If so then Springs Road would be a more direct route to that location. Where did Mageau live? I can’t remember. Could it be that he is linking the street to his route to home?

Thank you Richard. So basically, Mageau’s statement of Springs Road, is possibly more in line with their route of travel to home.
