11/9/1969, 12/20/1969 and 7/26/1970 have no apparent zipcode or district code. Recently I came across a map of San Francisco zip codes and it showed the golden gate as having no zipcode. The map showing district codes shows a white section and no code for Lake Merced Park.

First question: Could it be that the parks, although they don’t have zip or district codes, have drop boxes and thus received postmark with no zip or district code?

Comment: in another map of San Francisco the white section for Lake Merced is considered 3a. I don’t know when that changed.

Interesting as the 408 Cipher Card was posted from 3A.

Soze, the cancellations on these letters are different than any of the others. Would this be hand printed cancellations as opposed to machine ? If so why would this happen ?

I used to work in a satellite post office years ago. I was like 18 or 19 years of age and so it’s been awhile. We had hand stamps for cancellation of postage stamps and every day we would have to change the date and am/pm. The stamps we used to cancel stamps, which really was only upon request from the customer, were large. From memory, id say somewhere between quarter and half dollar size, like right in the middle maybe. The stamps, however, never came with those lines you see coming off the postmark. Those lines are done by machine. It would be impossible, in my opinion, to hand stamp an envelope and then run it through a machine to get the lines. Just isn’t happening. Secondly, hand postmarks, are placed directly on the stamp and not off to the side.

I’ve re-thought this and i think your right. There are multiple stamps over the stamps. That’s hand. Ive jyst never seen a hand stamp with the lines.

Thanks so can we assume that these did not go through a main processing area ?

is it possible that they were hand stamped directly at the post office , this could explain why the writing on these two envelopes is so different than his usual. If he posted from a post office as opposed to a mailbox he would try to disguise his writing so the post office workers would not recognise it .

This is an excellent thought. Any way to determine which post office?

Also, the 408 was mailed from 1A, not 3A. No letters were mailed from 3A, correct?

The anonymous key card for the 408 was 3A

Great work so far.

We need a map with every location that we can confirm Zodiac was at with the act and date. Can we do this with Google Maps?

I have done this with Google Maps, but I don’t know how to upload it here. Any techies want to give me a tutorial? lol

In the left upper corner you should see the menu button (3 horizontal lines). Click on it and pick "Share or embed map" and then copy the link and paste it here.

My understanding is that this can’t be done at the present time in Google Maps
without joining all the locations together as part of a ‘route’.
EDIT ‘although other features are available if you log-in to GoogleMaps…
(which Jarlve didn’t specify he was able to do)’.

Some months back I looked at this, and I seem to remember that Acme Mapper
might be close to what you want, e.g.;
https://mapper.acme.com/?ll=38.94439,-1 … Tahoe%20CA

(There’s also ArcGIS, possibly;
https://doc.arcgis.com/en/arcgis-online … meters.htm
).

Has it been determined where the fan letters to Armistead Maupin were mailed from?

Google Maps has a feature called "My Maps" where you can collect multiple locations into a single map. Here is an example showing the Zodiac crimes:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1I8jFx … sp=sharing

When logged in to Google Maps, you can see the feature in the menu as "Your Places". It will show four options (Labelled, Saved, Visited and Maps). "Maps" is the one you want.

@doranchak,

Something like that yep. And then add in all Zodiac activity with the act and date.

I have exactly that. I will upload tomorrow as I am out on a lecturing tour this weekend.

The one that I suspect could be from my poi and mailed when we were together in San Francisco (he wrote "Air Mail" on front of envelope and wanted me to write it on the back "so it would be from both of us" was mailed to the L.A. Times from what I think as best I can remember, a mailbox in front of the Chronicle building or near it.

I’ve posted something about this somewhere here some time ago.

The only difference I can see is that there is nothing in the return address area on what we see here. After writing "air mail" on the back as he requested, I pointed out to him that he forgot to put his return address (Corona del Mar, CA at that time) on the front. He then wrote a circle with 4 short lines protruding out from the circle (N,S,E,W) (the center area was blank) and told me he’d drawn his "logo" rather than his name.

This mailbox was near a multi-story parking garage where we were headed to get our rental car.

These details illustrate for me how difficult it is to pinpoint where Z was from as he could have been from anywhere! My boyfriend and I had flown there for the weekend (as many people do) from Los Angeles. It was a one hour flight. He picked up a rental car at the San Francisco airport and from there parked in a large, unique, multi-story parking garage.

For those not familiar with the city, think of London or Paris and all the tourists who visit there. How easy it is to get around in

OK, I am going to try to upload this map.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1_4KtT … sp=sharing

This includes the murders, the letter drops, and other areas of interest.

Murders are in red.

Confirmed communications are in black.

Rumored or possible events are in yellow.

As always, feedback is encouraged.
