The Zodiac never mentioned astrology AFAIK.

If he were so obsessed with it to kill his victims during some esoteric conjunction in Uranus, for example, I’m pretty sure he would have mentioned it in his letters.

Really, besides being into symbols for whatever reason, I suspect he chose "The Zodiac" and his symbol merely as a "hook" into the public, which was pretty much interested in New Age nonsense such as astrology back then.

He could have called himself "The Ohm" and signed his communications with "Ω", but I doubt many people were much into electronics then.

I think it’s possible that Z had something vaguely astrological in mind at some point .

Remember: The Zodiac had no moniker or symbol until he sent in his three-part cipher-letter combo.

Only after he struck pay-dirt with the Bay Area public did he choose a name and symbol. Before then, he was either silent but deadly, or just "the murderer", which hardly has the mellifluous ring of "The Zodiac".

Also note: he never again wrote VHT or The Examiner, two lesser papers, after his ciphers went certified gold with The Chronicle.

The Zodiac was a self-made media star who murdered strangers and wrote missives for fame, instead of pressing rock albums.

The real question is: why? Did he suffer crushing isolation in his personal life? Probably. And did the media, by glorifying every psycho in California, help create him? Arguably, yes. Was he merely a brutal psychopath with no regard for human life? Absolutely.

So for me, the real mystery doesn’t concern his legal name or the 340, but instead: what sort of monstrous personality would viciously manipulate a willing media and public by killing strangers, just to catapult the killer to stardom?

p.s. I think it’s possible The Zodiac struck again at BRS because there wasn’t enough media attention paid to the murders at LHR. I think he was expecting a media eruption, but instead the deaths of Jensen and Faraday were mentioned as "mere tragedies". I think he waited for the police to come calling, sure, but once he realized that not only was he not under arrest but that interest in the murders on Lake Herman was fading, he decided to ring the bell a little louder and a little closer to home.

Seems it worked.

Yes…but according to the list you posted earlier only two out of the five crimes were committed one day after a full moon. That’s clearly not a pattern.

If the pattern is that the crimes occur either one day after a new moon – or one day after a full moon, then yes, but BRS still doesn’t fit in. And as patterns go, it’s not what I’d call compelling. The canonical Z only operated during the weekend – which limits the number of possible days considerably, making any sort of zynchronicity less compelling, and having either new or full moon to go from – well, there you go: Not compelling.

I didn’t think there were that many combos for the 13 old zodiac signs they all are on the eliptic
if a planet was aligning with the moon on the murder dates that would be interesting .

I think there is a tie in to witchcraft with my story for a number of reasons .
as I have read at their sites it was /is a practice of their beliefs to celebrate on the new and full moon phase then to offer a sacrifice a day or so after
