I’m watching the fascinating HBO series The Jinx. Seeing how a remarkably wealthy man (Robert Durst) could be an alleged (and in all likelihood, actual) killer has made me much more sympathetic to Mr. X as a suspect. In addition, it has inspired me to find out just when Mr. Durst left California in 1969. ;)
I recommend the show to all in the forum.

I’ve been going through the Mare Island yearbooks to see if I might be able to find Robert Tarbox’s "Zodiac." I’m finding many folks who looked like the famous SF sketch (as expected), several that resemble the Berryessa sketch (not surprising), and quite a few who could match both sketches. This did surprise me, and I can finally see how these two sketches could actually be the same guy.

Everyone in the Academy had a nickname: "Dickybird," "Red Devil," etc. They all seemed to go to Vallejo to unwind. I wouldn’t be surprised if Zodiac came out of this background.

I’m curious to see how the handwriting evidence with the two letters will be handled in court. Durst’s defense team is already describing handwriting analysis as "junk science."

I was watching it. Fascinating stuff and I also started to overlay Zodiac onto the whole thing. A disguise, a letter etc etc. Those things are probably standard practice though and for all we know Durst might have been inspired in that respect by the Zodiac case for all we know. It’s not as if it wasn’t well publicized. I had the Mr X thoughts as well but in our own sphere of experience and knowledge it’s probably a normal thing for the brain to do in looking for patterns etc. Afaik Mr X is our only millionaire suspect so it’s an obvious correlation to draw.

I had a quick look at the handwriting stuff and it doesn’t look too bad. I don’t agree with some comments on matches but there are parts of it that certainly seem viable. Whether that’ll hold any water I guess we’ll see.

The other thing, of course, is the confession. It sounded like he was rehearsing out loud a likely accusatory conversation so what we were hearing was him doing both sides of that. I wonder if they’ll try and spin it that he was acting rather than confessing just to see how it would feel. It’s the "Oh God I want this" that might scupper that though. I don’t know. He’s an odd one so any defense is possible.

I don’t know Chief, he’s very smart or very dumb.
