Is it known what the "Blue Flu" Vallejo police strike was regarding?

Richard Grinell wrote an article recently about the ballistics at the Lake Herman Road attack citing the reports that suggested that the weaponry employed was a JC Higgins model 80 .22 automatic pistol. The report also states that it should "not be assumed the exhibits must have been fired in such a weapon". After reading compelling notes from Jelberg and Wilks about the unabomber and his homemade pistol, and bearing in mind the resourcefulness Zodiac exhibited throughout his campaign, how likely is it that Zodiac made his own weapon?

I’d say highly unlikely since it was pretty darned easy to buy a gun in those days, plus he used a semi-automatic which would be much harder to build at home without quite a machine shop. Also Bryan Harnell saw the gun at Berryessa, he didn’t say anything about it looking home made.
