If Cheri Jo Bates is a Zodiac attack victim then that’s one Volkswagen Beetle. The Lake Berryessa attack involved writing on a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.

So I am going to go out on a limb here and suggest he targets these makes because it’s easy to get access to the distributor cap and disconnect them?

If this is the case then it’s a way to identify possible Zodiac targets.

It would also mean they could be holding back from LB that the distributor cap was disconnected.

Which would be yet another thing pointing at a connection to CJB.

Speculation but I think worth speculating.

Anymore Volkswagen elements cropping up in the case?

While I won’t discount the possibility that Zodiac had a higher level knowledge of cars than the average person, I don’t think Zodiac “had a thing” for VWs.

More likely, Volkswagen cars were more popular back then, and thus he had a higher probability of encountering one. In fact, if you look at the chart below you can see that VW had it’s highest market shares between the years 1967 and 1971. There were simply more Volkswagens on the road back then.

I picked up a hitchhiker in my cream VW about 10 years ago.. he said thanks and after a while mumbled something about how do you know i am not a serial killer..
i paused and made a clicking sound in my throat and stammered.. what are the chances of two of us in the same car.
he got out next bus stop..

VW’s were hugely popular back then. It’s pretty much all our family owned.

Oh and Arthur Leigh Allen owned VWs.

So did Ted Bundy.

Tom, that reminds that according your website, Ted Bundy was a suspect in the Lake Berryessa attack before fingerprints cleared him in 1989. Did LE think Bundy designed the hooded costume to frame Zodiac for the attack, or did they think he could have been responsible for all the Zodiac murders?

It was just as easy to access a distributor cap in any other make of vehicle. Very few had inside latches in those days.

They just wanted to clear him. Bundy was a serial killer who spent time in the Bay Area.

I’m going to suggest that the Zodiac did not kill Bates.

If LE are holding back the distributor cap was disconnected would that have any impact on your view of that?

Do you have evidence that they are?

Thanks Tom, Bundy was incredibly prolific so it figures they considered him.

This "Good Samaritan" who happens to come along just at the right time to fix your car interests me. He looks like a young Zodiac.

What I really find interesting about him is that this is a guy who holds his cool around LE and then probably murders the victim he was aiding after.

Obviously that composite was put together by LE up close and personal and chatting with him.

If that guy is Z, that officer would be the best witness yet.

I see no reason why if this is all lining up that he didn’t disconnect the distributor of Hartnell’s car. It’s a bit of his M.O. I would expect it in this profile. It does a few things. Prevents them from leaving. Gives him an excuse to interact. However things seemed to work out different. Just speculation but I am giving reasons for it.

No, why would it?

No offense but he had nothing to do with the killings. Good Samaritans help out with cars all the time. It doesn’t mean they’re going to kill the person later.
