Vallejo Chief of Police asked in the newspaper for the Zodiac to show more proof he was the killer. Zodiac replies back rather quickly using the Woolworth’s paper. This was the first time he ever used it and not the same paper he originally used in past letters. So what does this mean? Did Zodiac run out of his original paper or was he stuck in the Bay area and didn’t have access to his original paper ?
Did Zodiac have some sort of obligation , job or other situation keeping him in the Bay area ? Did he like to frequent the city almost daily ? Did he just happen to be there out of the blue ? Did he happen to live there ?
I would say Zodiac definitely had ties with SF. I’m thinking maybe he worked there. I have often wondered if Zodiac decided to kill in SF, not for big-city recognition, but to veer away from Vallejo.
Woolworth’s was a HUGE store in SF…and just around the corner from the Chronicle.
"Circa 1957 – Woolworth’s at Market and Powell Streets – Woolworth’s replaced the Rexall Drug Store in the Flood Building in 1952 and was in that location for the next several decades. Most of us remember the smell of their famous pizza, popcorn and fried chicken takeout, plus 2 lunch counters. Christmas decorations were a huge business for them, as well. Notice the very edge of the building at the far left with Dr. Rosenblatt, Dentist. That is where Hallidie Plaza is today. The building on the left across from Woolworth’s was a Bank of America for many years. A Gap Clothing Store is on the Woolworth’s corner today."
Great Pic Tahoe! I think the Zodiac wanted big city recognition but you could be right. I have a theory that Zodiac killed in the Vallejo area and then LB first to throw LE off of his original residence in the Bay area. Then finally killing Stine is his own area and getting the recognition he wanted. But who knows and thanks for your response Tahoe.
By the way since nobody else wants to respond to this, My suspect lived around the corner of both. The Woolworth’s building and Chronicle. Also about a mile or less from Geary street at the time of the Stine Murder. This is not my point though and wonder why Zodiac change his paper ?

I believe it was Woolworth’s paper watermarked 5th Avenue??
I believe it was Woolworth’s paper watermarked 5th Avenue??
It was and he used it on the 340 cipher as well. Where’d you get the ‘Eaton’ from Stitch? Were there some that were written on that?
Read it somewhere but not of the actual police report so maybe it’s wrong ?
I read that Eaton was the maker of the 5th Ave. watermarked paper for Woolworths. From what I remember the Eaton Company was from New York and ship the paper to Wolworths in San Fransisco. Here is all I could find on Eaton paper company if it’s even the right one.

Ah gotcha now. Thanks for clarifying.
Reading the FBI files now and and the paper came from the Woolworths building in New York. Not in the report but apparently it was then shipped to the Woolworths Flood building in San Francisco. And if what I read awhile back was right, the paper was originally made by the Eaton co.
Ok, I’ve looked everywhere for an answer to this question, Maybe someone out there knows ….
I thought I read somewhere that the monarch paper used by the zodiac might have been cut out of square slightly? Is this accurate or was there anything not perfect about the paper? I know it’s a strange question. Any help would be great.
Hey dude I remember reading that to on one of the forum it may have been on zodiackillerfacts not exactly sure though. Kind of like it was a bad run or Batch of paper one of the posters was saying it may have been a worker at the paper plant that got there hands on it .I’ll try and look as well
Thank you! Any help here would be great
That originated in the yellow book FWIW.
But is there any truth to it that the monarch paper was somehow “not perfect”. Either not square or the like?
