The American Cryptogram Association is having a convention in Asheville, NC next month and I plan to give a talk there on Saturday, September 8th. The talk is titled "What is Zodiac’s 340-character cipher?" I hope to describe all the significant observations, status of current research, and an sketch of various hypotheses. My goal is to renew interest in Z340 among the ACA members, which hopefully will lead to new insights.

I need some help from the cipher folks here:

What observations about Z340 do you think are the most important? What comes to mind for me are:

  • The presence of cycling behavior (despite being somewhat weak compared to Z408)
  • The pivot patterns
  • A trigram that repeats in the same columns
  • The periodic bigram bias
  • Regional bigram bias (i.e., top half has 9 repeating bigrams but bottom only has 1)
  • Even/odd bigram bias (i.e., removing symbols on even positions results in much different bigram count than removing odds)
  • The unexpectedly high number of non-repeating sequences with length of 17
  • The unexpectedly high number of rows that have no repeating symbols in them (related: the symmetry of top and bottom halves, with regard to their first 3 lines each having no repeats)
  • An unusual number of symbols are missing from the middle 8 rows (or more generally: regional symbol bias)
  • Kasiski exam spike at period 78
  • The fact that Z340 seems similar to Z408 in several ways, but we are finding it to be very different
  • Possible zodiac-like signature at the bottom
  • [/list:u:1b5xn952]

What else would you add to that list?

I also want to know: What is the status of current research? My general sense is that several of you (smokie, jarlve, largo, etc) have done a lot of work ruling out specific transposition schemes, improving the automatic solvers and tools, creating test ciphers, etc. How would you characterize the progress made, current status, and future direction of efforts? And what do you think are the most promising hypotheses? I think the best general hypothesis is "Zodiac did something (such as transposition) to the plaintext before substitution." But do we have reason to favor certain subcategories of that broad hypothesis?

Thank you for any input you can give!

What observations about Z340 do you think are the most important? What comes to mind for me are:

1) The presence of cycling behavior (despite being somewhat weak compared to Z408)
2) The pivot patterns
3) A trigram that repeats in the same columns
4) The periodic bigram bias
5) Regional bigram bias (i.e., top half has 9 repeating bigrams but bottom only has 1)
6) Even/odd bigram bias (i.e., removing symbols on even positions results in much different bigram count than removing odds)
7) The unexpectedly high number of non-repeating sequences with length of 17
8) The unexpectedly high number of rows that have no repeating symbols in them (related: the symmetry of top and bottom halves, with regard to their first 3 lines each having no repeats)
9) An unusual number of symbols are missing from the middle 8 rows (or more generally: regional symbol bias)
10) Kasiski exam spike at period 78
11) The fact that Z340 seems similar to Z408 in several ways, but we are finding it to be very different
12) Possible zodiac-like signature at the bottom

1) Very strong observation. Property of sequential homophonic substitution.
2) Very strong observation and easily the most baffling. Seems to be part of period 39 which is half of 78. It would be easy to dismiss these as nulls but since they appear to be part of something bigger tells us that at least it is not the only option to consider.
3) Not sure.
4) Strong to very strong observation. While there are "only" 37 bigram repeats at period 19, simple operations prior or after period 19 can increase bigrams significantly. Period 19 appears to be just the tip of the iceberg.
5) Not sure. But possibly not a strong observation ~1 to 2 sigma.
6) Same as 5.
7) Adds to point 1. A property of sequential homophonic substitution. Needs more research.
8) Adds to point 1. A property of sequential homophonic substitution. The symmetry is possibly a random pattern since the 340 has about the amount of rows with no repeats as is expected from a sequential homophonic substitution cipher with about 25% encoding randomization.
9) Medium to strong observation. Some correlation with sequential homophonic substitution.
10) Not sure. Possibly a property of sequential homophonic substitution. Or a keyword length of 39, 78.
11) From the same author. Most frequent symbol in the 408 is a 1:1 substitution. Possibly the same for the 340. Largo hypothesizes that the 408 uses a key based on some frequency table that deviates from "Zodiac’s frequencies". Therefore the ioc of the 408 is quite high. And since the ioc of the 340 is even a bit higher, this may be a good sign that there is indeed a real plaintext message hidden beneath.
12) I think you have shown that it is a strong observation.

It would be cool if you just include all these points and go through the dilemmas we face in trying to determine the worth and meaning of each observation. In a way we are trying to solve a sudoku puzzle in which only a few numbers are filled in.

Personally. I think that period 19 deserves about 2/3 of my efforts but I work on other stuff as well. Progress is good but limited by computer power. Keyed transposition is especially hard to explore because of the homophonic substitution layer. My future direction of efforts is focused on improving general solving power. Find out what the nature of the supposed 25% encoding randomization is.

Special thanks to smokie for working with me on the nulls & skips solver this year.

Thanks, Jarlve. If anyone ever refers to me they can call me Geoff L., however. My avatar name doesn’t sound very serious, and I sort of regret the choice. I didn’t think that I would get so involved at the time.

Homophonic Substitution and Cycles

It it were me, I would quickly explain about how the 408 is homophonic substitution, but that 49 years of exhaustive efforts at trying to solve the 340 as such have come up with nothing, including attempts by hand and with solvers that can solve other homophonic cryptograms in seconds.

Then I would talk about the cycles and make comparison. The number of different symbols involved and complexities of trying to sort through different L=2, L=3, L=4 etc. cycles trying to figure out which ones are true and which ones are false. Then discuss keeping things simple with L=2, and how reading the message from all corners and all directions LRTB shows higher scores. Talk about shuffling the message and how shuffled messages don’t cycle nearly as well.

Demonstrate that the actual cycle pattern encoded with can be detected with isomorphic cycle patterns. Show how 408 has long strings of ABABABAB but the 340 has some, but not as many, and also some ABAABAABA. If all pattern possibilities are put on the x axis of a very long graph, there is a spike there at ABAABAABA, and that kind of spike doesn’t just show up with random symbol selection or perfect cycling of practice messages.

Non Repeating Sequences of 17 and Regional Biases

That naturally takes us to high number of non repeating sequences of length 17, and the regional bias symbols, especially the W and the theta, which don’t appear in any cycle patterns at all. Efforts at making messages with perfect cycling does not result in such regional biases.

The + Symbol

Then talk about the + symbol. It’s high symbol count compared to the others, and how it could possibly map to a single letter, be a null, or maybe a polyphone. Discuss how solver programs can still come up with a fairly good solution to homophonic cryptograms that have one polyphone with count of 24. Talk about how some symbols are more cyclic than others, and the + doesn’t cycle well with any other symbol, further suggesting that it may be a null or polyphone.

The Kasiski Spike and The Pivots

Then I would highlight the pivots and discuss the probabilities of these occurring in a homophonic cryptogram. Show the Kasiski spike at P78. Contrast with a simple Kasiski graph for a Vinegere cryptogram. Then show how the pivots are at P39 and 39 x 2 = 78.

P19

But then say that is not all. Check out the P19 spike reading LRTB. The pattern can be found by reading from all corners in all directions. Maybe show how drafting into different column counts make it easier to visualize the pattern. Draft into 19, but then show 20 columns and the diagonal lines created.

Then show some of the most improbable of this pattern, like with the three < S at P19, and how there are only six of the < and four of the S.

Then talk about how difficult it is to make a message that has such a spike at a period like P19, unless one is actually trying to do it by making adjustments to a homophonic key. Then, show how P1 is high with the 408, and P1 is low with the 340, further suggesting some type of transposition before encoding. Talk about how encoding first, and then transposing, will make a spike, but then there would be no cycles. The presence of the P19 spike in conjunction with the cycle patterns suggest transposition before encoding.

Talk about shuffling the message again, and the P19 spike. That is very compelling statistical information.

Alternative Ciphers

Talk about how bifid ciphers and EDIT: two row rail fence ciphers can also cause P19 repeats, if the chunks of message encoded are just the right size, but that when smaller chunks of message are encoded or transposed this way, it is really difficult to get spikes as high as the 340.

P15 and P29

Then show that the P15 spike is even bigger when reading RLTB. Then show that all of a sudden, when reading this direction, there is a spike at P29. Oh, then go back to the pivots, and show that the pivots are P29 when reading RLTB. Then how reading LRTB there is a spike at P39, but not as big, and the pivots are on P39 reading this way.

Then talk about how bigrams and how P1 can easily become P15 or P19 after transposition, and how P2 could become P30 or P39 after transposition, and how P39 is almost, but not quite P19 x 2, and how P29 is almost P15 x 2.

Talk about how the pivots then could maybe have been created by some type of transposition process, but then float the idea that they could be an intentional red herring. But then how could it be that someone would put two pivots as red herrings, but then they are also at P29 and there would be a spike at P29 even without the pivots.

Transposition

Then talk about different types of transposition, and the sheer number of possibilities there are. Compare simple columnar transposition, or route transposition, with keyed columnar transposition. Show how multiple inscription shapes could have been used, or multiple transcription shapes could have been used. But then show that even with one inscription rectangle, and one transcription rectangle, the presence of a few nulls or skips can cause misalignments that make a jigsaw puzzle when a message in untransposed. Show a simple example of plaintext, not encoded, transposed this way, then untransposed, but then with one null or skip, with one misalignment. Then show what happens with a three or four nulls or skips. Just plaintext, no symbols. Then show how with symbols, the problem gets really tough.

Jarlve now has a program that does double hill climbing, trying to detect the positions of nulls and skips. And with test messages up to 12 nulls, 12 skips, or a combination adding up to 12, messages that are transposed before encoding can be solved. And that is where we are heading now. Jarlve may want to add to this.

The Signature

Talk about the Zodiac signature

Maybe then talk about how if anyone has worked privately on the 340 and has something significant to share, please do because we still don’t really know what the cipher is.

If you do that, everyone in the room will go back to their hotel room that night with minds blown.

I cleaned up the above post, and here is a symbol chart showing what phenomenon are associated with what symbols:

I think that showing a chart similar to this one would be a good way to wrap up a presentation.

Awesome, I’m always happy when there are new presentations from you. I hope that there will be a video this time too.

I have the same view of the weighting of your proposed topics as Jarlve. Smokie also listed the most important topics. So I’ll just write a few comments:

I do not think points 5 and 6 are the most important ones. I had created several thousand test ciphers with my statistics tool in Peek-a-boo and there were very often huge differences between upper/lower and odd/even. Many of them are even bigger than in z340. I don’t see any unusual behavior in this. I can’t remember the exact result, but if you want, I can start the test again.

Point 8: The number of rows without repetitions is a clear indication of a sequential (horizontal) substitution. But I think the symmetry of the first three lines of the lower/upper half is a pure coincidence. Dan Olson’s assumption to put the two halves next to each other is in my opinion inconclusive, because then one would have to see similar statistics in the resulting cipher. (Oh oh…I’m criticizing a statement from an FBI employee)

What I would suggest as a topic would be the 48 bigrams, 8 trigrams phenomenon:
viewtopic.php?p=55478#p55478
This is based on Jarlves find that a shift of z340 by one column increases the Bigram count at P19. I did a lot of tests with all sorts of operations, but none got anywhere near 48 bigrams and 8 trigrams. Since these are not wacky operations, I think this is worth a look. Unfortunately, there are no further investigations on this yet.

Also interesting would be the connection between P19 and some Magic Squares.

And very important: If Jarlve doesn’t mind, you could introduce AZDecrypt. I don’t think many people are yet aware of how well homophonic encryption can be solved with it.

The + and the p are not associated with the ABAABA pattern. Here is the link to where I show the graph. I have made messages with ABABAB cycles all perfect and don’t get groups of spikes with another symmetrical pattern chunk like the ABAABA pattern. But you are invited to check me some time. I would like that.

Much appreciated Largo. The talk went well. I hope to edit the audio together with the slides into a video and post it on YouTube soon.

My impression is that everyone is just as mystified as we are about what Zodiac might have done with the 340. They seemed interested in the specific oddities like periodic bigrams, peak unique sequences for length 17, and the Kasiski exam peak at 78 (double the pivot period).

Wow that is really exciting! I can hardly wait to see the video. It would be interesting to see the expressions on their faces, but I figure you alone got to see them all. I bet that was a lot of fun. Thank you for everything that you have done.

UPDATED

I tested the frequencies of all patterns versus a whole lot of randomizations. Within any combination of 9 A’s or B’s, the pattern "ABABABABA" is the most signficant with "ABAABABAB" being the runner up. Pattern "ABAABAABA" does spike but perhaps not that significant, at least 15 other patterns have a spike of comparable strength. The "+" and "p" symbols are indeed not associated with the "ABAABAABA" pattern.
