Here is someone’s attempt at the 340. It is very similar to Graysmith’s. While I don’t think it’s accurate, I would like anyone with cipher experience to chime in and say if (you think) any of it is possible.

I think that is Graysmith’s. The other document references Penn.

Nope, not Graysmith’s version.

I am pretty sure that is the earliest version of the Graysmith proposed solution.

It largely matches what is in the FBI file.

The way I can tell this is an early version of Graysmith is the solution contains Herb Caen, Toschi, "some mail K.T.", "I give them hell too", "see a name" – all of which are in the 1986 final Graysmith proposed solution.

Also this version contains some lines that Graysmith later made corrections and improvements to – for example here it says "these fools helped me", final Graysmith says "these foolshall see."

It is POSSIBLE someone else did this and came up with something very, very close to Graysmith, but I doubt it. Some of what is here is so unique and unusual, and it matches or near matches Graysmith, I would say 99% likely this is in fact an early incomplete and messed up version of Graysmith done by Graysmith himself. He would later make improvements and corrections, but the matches give it away.

The FBI document reads as if this person who came up with this conclusion was Penn (thx Qz1) . Unless Graysmith had a father in the DOJ. ??

No the commentary references Penn’s 21 page effort.

This stuff may have got jumbled, but the one page proposed solution is early Graysmith.
