While preparing for episode 3 of my YouTube series, I wanted to see the differences between the Z408 plaintexts published in police reports and the newspapers.

Not sure yet about all of "hongertue" but I believe "tue" is due to symbol confusion.

In the correct key, the crosshairs symbol stands for D and the circle with horizontal line stands for H.
So maybe the Hardens initially confused those two symbols with each other, resulting in the H in HONGERTUE.
It’s not clear how a similar confusion could have happened between O and A, though.
